I would like to see one of these operate. I wonder how much wood it takes to keep them running.
 
The wood is burned slow with not too much air so it gives off the combustible gas. I still can't answer your question though. My uncle built a gasifier and ran his antique engines with it at shows. He tried it on his pickup but said it was slow on the hills on the interstate.
 
I was looking at some plans for doing just that, running a flywheel engine off of a gassifier.

It got really complicated and would be quite expensive, even doing all the fab work myself!
 
My uncle just built it without plans and as I remember used a bunch of stuff just lying around. He would run a buzz saw with the engine and cut slab wood for the gasifier.
 
I have one built by my dad on an E27N Fordson Uses about 30 pounds of small pieces of wood under full load of about 20 hp. I do have a video of it running....somewhere...
