Mackinac Bridge tractor crossing for 2023 cancelled

Elect a governor who says she's gonna fix the damm roads and what happens? You can't go anywhere because of all the road construction!

It is a beautiful structure. I always liked crossing it as a kid, but the first few times I drove it as an adult, I white-knuckled it all the way across! I dont know how you guys do it on tractors. Dave

They are working on that bridge painting every year all summer long. the open one lane for the tractors and every other event all summer long also. Then after the event is done they close the one lane again. A 4 lane bridge amounts to a 2 lane most of the time.

I'm ok with the road construction and roads being torn apart. What ticks me off is when they tear out a road then move on and tear out a different road without fixing the first one.

I am sure that the local businesses will be tickled pink with the loss of revenue from this event. Rest assured tho that the bridge will be available on Labor Day for our beloved Governor to waddle across for their annual Bridge Walk

First time I crossed that water was by ferry before the bridge was there.

Then I crossed it by the bridge in 1969.

Is it cancelled permanently or just for one year? A change of scenery for one year can be refreshing.

RAGBRI (Register's Annual Great Bike Race Across Iowa) chooses different routes every year to change the terrain and to spread the business among more towns along the 300 mile long routes.

The 2023 route announcement will be made on on January 28, 2023 https:

Given a choice, I'm sure the businesses would rather have fifty thousand bridge walkers than a few thousand tractor riders.

Good one, Randy!

This picture taken about 6 yrs ago. Only 2 lanes were open in July. Look on the upper right of the picture. The 2 black dots are 2 painters with safety harness on top of the green suspension pipe doing some maintenance painting like the poster below stated. I think they do painting every summer. I don't know how they climbed up there. Those green pipes enclose dozens & dozens of steel cables that hold up the bridge deck. Especially where the open span is between the 2 towers that the ships cross under. That thing is an engineering masterpiece. Note the steel grid bridge floor that you can see the water under your vehicle (or tractor).

Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs did a show from there . Very interesting.
They couldn't pay me enough to work on that!

Seems like about every show that's exclusively about things here in Michigan, the host has gone to the top of the towers. Just
watching makes my feet and legs feel funny. I think my show would be cancelled if they told me I had to go up there.

Is there a short simple reasoning for that see through metal deck on some lanes, looks like tar on other lanes?

Road construction gets tiring. Lack of road construction gets bone jarring frustrating. It a tough deal to win at.....

locally they have had the two major state highways under construction (they merge for a bit to cross the river) 4 of the past 5 years, with one more year to go. We have 3 river crossing bridges. At the same time the highways are closed, they are either working on one of the other bridges, the road to one of the other bridges was flooded, or the road leading to one of the other bridges slumped away and closed. With so much semi truck fast traffic and so much slow farm traffic all converging through these detours and closed river crossings, and so often only 1 of the three bridges open, it has really been a lot of wear and tear on the nerves for so many years.

The end results are good and needed. The timing is often awful and the frustration of it does get to a person.
