When replacing the head gasket on my Farmall 706 with the glow plug 282 cid engine I found that there was no thermostat installed. I am trying to figure out where the thermostat really goes. There is a machined surface where a regular thermostat (like picture #2) would commonly go next to the gasket in that upper casting. That would be easy enough, but I think the water pump bypass would bypass to the radiator rather than the engine. I have a gut feeling that the thermostat either goes down in the head or up into that casting. I did find an old crusty rubber gasket that I dug out of that top casting. I also would think the water pump bypass would only circulate coolant within the engine, so that would also help determine where the thermostat goes. Maybe the 706 still takes one of those large old fashioned thermostats? I also see some on the internet with some kind of brass looking adaptors that would make a common thermostat work. I am sure some of you old Farmall/IH guy know. Thanks.
