Model 65 engine identification

I m trying to buy a head gasket set for my 1959 Massey Ferguson model 65. I believe I have a Perkins 203 indirect injection motor. I was told there are two types of 203s that require a different head gasket set. I was told I had to measure a flange on either the head or block to determine which gasket set I need. Has anyone come across this issue and can you tell me what I have to measure. I m still waiting on this place to call me back to get a better explanation.

The early North American built MF 65 diesels used the Perkins A4-203 indirect injection engine. They switched to the direct injection AD4-203 I think in 1962. The A4 has 17 head studs and the AD4 has 23 if that helps.

(quoted from post at 04:06:17 06/06/23) I forgot to mention, the injectors are vertical in the A4 head and go in at an angle in the AD4 head.

Yes my motor has the vertical injectors. The fact that the motors have a different number of head bolts should make it easy to determine which one I need. Like I said though the sales rep told me the A4 used two different head configurations. This leaves me still confused. Do you agree with him that there might be two different A4 engines?

I can't give you a decisive answer to that question. I have not heard of variations of the A4 engine. Suggest you scroll down to the MH & MF Forum and direct that question to Dieseltech. He worked as a Massey Ferguson mechanic for several years and knows more about the fine points than I do.

Thanks Bob from New York. You were right. I called yesterdays tractors back because they never returned my call. The guy I got on the phone today got me the gaskets I need for my A4 203 regular injected motor. Which is one of two Perkins diesels offered in that tractor. Like you said the other is the AD4 203 direct injection.
