Quick question. Hooking disc mower to different tractor and the pto shaft needs to be shortened 4 inches. Can I take it all off one half or do I need to take 2 inches off each half? I thought distance from 3 point to pto was an industry standard but dealer says no. All different.

I'd stick a tape down inside the female end and see if the male end is bottoming out. If it isn't, it wouldn't do much good to take the whole four inches off the male end.

f removing from the female part, be sure you don't cut off all of the keyed (square or whatever shape) as some shafts only have a few inches keyed & the rest just a pipe.

What you said is very true - a lot of PTO shafts are made
that way and on those you cannot simply chop the end off
of the female portion.

Distance from PTO was a hitch standard but some tractors had a lot more adjustment
than that. Tractor PTO to implement gear box was not standardized.

PTO distance is based on rear wheel size and therefore the bottom link length. compact tractors take a very short pto, where 30 to 40 hp take a longer, and 60 hp and bigger with 38 inch tires take a much longer pto shaft. A pto shaft should... have at least..50% of the shafts engaged (overlapping) for proper strength in normal use, more is ok as long as the shaft can still move a bit in and out as needed when the the 3pt is raised and not bottom out and put pressure on the pto shaft bearing and housing. Technically you should cut even amounts from both ends if possible, again trying to make sure that at east 50% of the shafts are over lapping. Or maybe not.. per something I read somewhere? Lots of times where you add an orc, you must cut both shafts to allow safe installation..

If you get a quick hitch to put on it, it'll give you the four inches. OOps. I was thinking of a 3 point hitch. If you have the draw bar one maybe get a longer draw bar.

Here's a picture of what JMOR is talking about. Many round shafts have this piece welded into one end of them. That square index does not run the length of the shaft. TSC also sells these pieces.
