Ford 1710 knocking

I just got my first tractor, a 1986 Ford 1710. Brought it home, did an oil change, changed fuel filter and return hoses, changed fan belt, and topped off antifreeze. Today it started knocking, but the knock went away under load(gravel build in blade). There s some blue smoke too. I did use synthetic oil, and had to use a packing under oil plug because the rubber washer ripped when I removed it. Any ideas? Thanks.

I also changed the oil filter and air filter. Didnt know I had to
fill bulb over fuel filter and air locked the engine.

oil drain plugs rarely have rubber washers. They are steel brass or copper. Did oil come out when you removed the plug?

I think it is a bad idea that drain plugs are using rubber center drain plug seals. They are usually available at auto parts stores depending on size. Usually
metric. I had to replace such a seal on a Perkins. BIL had to replace his drain plug seal on his 97 Ford powerstroke. I had to order a set so I could have a
variety on hand.

Yes. I drained the old oil, and then when i realized it was
leaking after oil change oil came out when I removed plug to
add o ring.

(quoted from post at 06:54:14 07/17/23) I have some brass crush washers. Will those work?

Probably, because that is what is used in many plug applications. An O-ring can't work because it will squish out before the plug is tight enough to hold.

The drain plug is not the source of the knocking, unless of course you let all the oil leak out, did not refill the oil, and ran the tractor anyway... Then your engine is pooched.

WHERE is it knocking? You have to figure that out. If you don't have a mechanic's stethoscope, the old "listen to the long screwdriver" trick will help you locate the knock. Does it matter if moving or not moving? Does it vary with engine RPM? Does it vary with the gear used?

It's a 2-cylinder diesel if I'm not mistaken. To me those things sound like they are ALWAYS knocking and ready to come apart.

Yes they will most of the time. I have a set of brass, copper washers as well that so far seem to seal ok.

I just bought some, but of course can t find them now that I need them

turning off when I kill the throttle.

There is a condition known as fuel knock in diesel engines which originates in the injection system. A much cheaper problem than a rod or crank knock. Sounds like you have fuel issues. Hopefully, the source of the knock will be found there.
