I lived in a house like that my first year of college. 2 foot thick limestone walls, and a monster of a wood furnace in the basement. I learned not to split elm firewood until the temp was below zero. Otherwise, the mall just bounces off the block. steve

The only way to deal with Elm for firewood is to wait til it stands dead for a couple of years and the bark starts to fall off. Takes forever for it to dry out enough for burning otherwise.
