Oliver 1550 steering

Figured I'd post here instead of the Oliver forum for more exposure. From time to time the steering stops working on my 1550, steering wheel spins and the front wheels don't move, only for a couple of seconds and then works. It still has the original steering motor. I'd have heard that parts are no longer available so everyone changes them to CharLynn units. Could something else cause this to happen? Seems like I read a long time ago about someone using the steering motor out of a Massey combine to replace the steering motor. I have a MF 550 to scrap someday, wondering if I could use the one from it in the tractor. Chris

As far as I know Chris, those combine hydra motors are the same. I'm not sure about all three holes for the tilt being there though, you'd have to look. You know how to take the shaft off to change to the shorter tractor steering shaft don't you? Don't ask me how. I've had them off to change seals in two of them, but I couldn't walk you through it right now. I figured it out, so I know you can.

Could it be the priority valve causing the delay?

When I got it, the steering wheel was pulled all of the way out and rusted solid, so I put a different one on then. It was agravating but I got it changed, still have a couple extra of the little steel ball that drop out and you can't find them. I've never messed with a priority valve yet so I don't know.

The only time my 1850 does what you're describing is when it's cold and low on oil, so I'm thinking it has to do with no oil flowing to the hydra motor. The steering wheel just goes around easy but nothing happens.

I have a small Kubota lawn tractor, but it has hydraulic steering similar to other hydraulic steering systems. It has a steering motor and front cylinder, two way, that controls the front wheels. There is no mechanical control. two years ago it got where it would not turn right, but would turn left. Sometimes the steering wheel could make 40 turns{actually counted} before any action. Turn left a little and right was ready.I rebuilt the steering cylinder and it steers like new. Odd things happen with hydraulics.

2 things i seen on a 1650 and 1850,1 was the shaft the tricycle front has going down in the casting was broke off jagged. it steered ok with just tractor, they were pulling a trailer type plow n it was bad.
then the 1850 drove eradical at times. turned out to be the big bolt that tightens the tierod arm to the gear shaft up front was loose.
dealer goofup there. it went to a big shop to get new seals in the piston . a grease monkey didnt tighten the bolt

The bolt that holds the pinion gear on, inside the cylinder loosened up in my 1850 one time. That one hesitated because the gear was moving up on the tapered splined shaft, but that one wandered so bad that it was miserable to drive. It got so bad picking corn that I parked it and used the 1550.
