tachometer conversion

I would like to convert my broken mechanical tachometer to electronic. Does anyone know an accurate way to accomplish this?

Presuming the engine has an alternator, an alternator-sensed electronic diesel tach will work fine. Can even get them with an integral totalizer (hour meter).

Look at ISSPRO as suggested above. Also try Faria and Teleflex. Or go to a marine electronics catalog such as West Marine.

An electronic tach won't be cheap - probably $150 or so. And unless the alternator has a "W" terminal you'll need to open the alternator to solder a tach sense wire to a stator terminal (not a big deal...)

If your tractor doesn't have an alternator here's a couple other options:

Install an electronic tach sensor on the existing mechanical tach drive to run an electronic tach. Stewart-Warner and Faria (and probably others...) make 'em. But it will cost more than an alternator-sensed tach.

Get a magnetic pickup electronic diesel tach. This senses RPM by counting flywheel teeth. But it requires mounting a sensor where it can "see" the flywheel ring gear. (The Cummins 855 in my old Kenworth has one - it works great. The tach face is labeled Kenworth but I believe it was made by Stewart-Warner).
