Ok I am in the market for a 4 - 5 foot wide 3 - 4 foot diameter roller/drum to use at our antique tractor clubs shows. I really like the ones that use the front drum off of a roller. The 1 thing I am not to for sure about is the reason for the front drum having 2 drums about 2 foot wide each placed side by side on the front end of the roller. I wonder why they didnt use one drum like on the rear of a roller. I can buy here local a old steam engine roller front drum it is mad of 1 solid drum. I wonder if the difference would have something to do with the steering?

If I understand correctly, the 2 drums side by side don't use a common axle and are independant. This is good if there is a crown on the road that's being packed. Usually a sheeps foot will have 2 seperate drums. I've never seen a smooth roller with 2 seperate drums. A smooth drum is for asphalt or gravel and a sheeps foot is for clay type soils. Dave

I was talking to a guy at work and he said that if the roller was sitting still and the operator was to turn the steering wheel 1 of the drums would turn backwards and the other one forwards. I never thought of the sitting still turning idea.
