I pulled the mag off the WC today, and tried it out. I tested it like i did the FMJ (which now fires on all 4 instead of 3) and to nobodys great suprise, got nothing. I have never even seen the inside of a mag so i have no clue what im doing. What should i check or replace before i start looking for a working mag??? Its an IH something or other.....

It would have to be an IH H4 mag. First thing to check would be the points. Get a small piece of emery paper, fold it in half and rub it up and down between the points, then clean with a rag. Finally gap the points .013 inch. If the mag still won"t fire, you may need a new coil or condenser.

If you would like, you can mail it to me and I will rebuild if for you, no charge, just to help out a young tractor collector.

truth be told i dont even know what a point is....

If you could fill me in here i'll try it, outherwise you have mail

Lanse,
I'm sure enjoying your maturing process. Do you think when you started posting here you would have been so quick to admit you didn't know what a point was?

I can't help but notice how you have changed or rather you matured as well. Us older dudes changed our attatudes towards you as also as we notice the politness you now maintain. Us old cronies will try to help you, and we now actualy enjoy your posts.

Points are like hooking your thumbs together and touching your first fingers together. Now if you can remember walking across a carpet and touching something that is grounded...you get a spark on your finger tip. thats kinda the best way to explain points I guess, as your fingers would spark as you touched them together if they were (your fingertips) were called points. The reason you need to clean them is the spark won't happen if your fingers had corosion on them (like wearing rubber gloves) then no spark.

Also remember that us old guys had to ask questions when we were your age, so don't feel bad asking question. Some of us did't ask enough questions, an probably have a few boxes full of parts to prove my point.

It is indeed kind of neet to realize that the folks years ago figured out how to make a mag, carb, or for that matter the whole tractor.

Keep it up, you are doing just fine. By the way, you probably don't know this as well....In just what seems a real short time----you will be old also.

May just need a simple tune up of points and condenser or at least cleaning the points up to see if it has fire yet. Impulse on drive end needs to have a snappy trip to it too. The whole IHC Blue Ribbon magneto repair manual is online if want to try fixing it yourself. Main thing is when cover comes off to change points many take the gears out too and get them off time which throws the dist rotor off time not firing in right place. Manual explains how to keep from getting that off and keep it in time. If it hasn't been apart in 20-60 years though most likely could benefit from having bearings regreased and magnet recharged too by a professional.
