I'm thinking that I would like to restore a diesel tractor next... not sure what kind, but if I do, what would be the thing for me to watch out for more than anything else? I've restored a lot of gas tractors, but never a diesel one. I've been burnt a few times, so if I can be more careful and know some of the pitfalls, it might help. Thanks, Pastor Ray

I dont know, but i am told them pumps are expensive and very complicated. I would like an MD someday-or a WD45 Diesal

Quite honestly im supprised i can spell gas

Today i was playing around in the shop when a van pulled up. It was a man and his daughter and They asked me a bunch of questions about my chickens and raising them and offered me some since they diddnt want the required 25 (minumum order). I declined but gave them the name of someone who probabally would. We stood around and talked for 20 minuites or so then then they took off with some eggs. It later dawned on me that that was my gym teacher and his daughter is in my grade. LOL i wish the summer would never end :)

LOL youre always welcome. I looked through the articles on this site, but all i could find on the subject was diesal troubleshooting. How to restore classic farmall tractors has a section on diesals

We have gas and diesel tractors, and diesels are nothing to be intimidated by. The injection pumps are expensive to work on, but most everything else is easier to deal with than a gas tractor. No fouled plugs, no gummed up carburetors from sitting up, no sticking floats, the fuel won't go bad, etc... I'm not trying to knock gas tractors, but diesels are more forgiving once you get them right. On a cold day, though, the heat off of a gas motor is nice. The diesels don't seem to keep you as warm.

Guys we are in trouble now. I think we are gonna loose lanse.

He is starting to notice women.:)~})

With the exception of cylinder compression and ignition, a diesel engine is almost identical to a fuel injected gasoline engine.

"In the diesel engine, only air is introduced into the combustion chamber. The air is then compressed to 600 psi, compared to 200 psi in the gasoline engine. This high compression heats the air to 1000 °F. At this moment, fuel is injected directly into the compressed air. The fuel is ignited by the heat, causing a rapid expansion of gases that drive the piston downward, supplying power to the crankshaft." -wikipedia

I'm tempted to say that a Pastor getting burnt isn't the right kind of practice for the hereafter, but I'll restrain myself and not say it...
Seriously (if we're still speaking) when you feel temptation overcoming you as to a particular diesel, price a complete overhaul kit and a replacement pump; some of those prices will extinguish temptation faster than prayer...
Hope you have a sense of humor larger than my ability to control my urge to play with words...

Yes, being a pastor, I need a sense of humor at times, and maybe I should have said,"I've been taken". Thanks for the input, and you do have a way with words. Take care

I'd like to burn the guy that burnt me last! The dude didn't tell me the water pump failed and he overheated the engine, which warped the head, which made the head gasket fail, which made coolant leak into the crankcase.

The moral of the story is always do a leak down test before you hand them the cash, even if it's on a dealers lot... like this one was.

Don't do it, Lanse! I used to be a good trout fisherman at your age--then I discovered girls. Ruined my life. I could have been something--a trout bum.

lanse, you already got a girl her name is allis, and she wont like you spendin time with another

Well since you have allready been burnt and are gun shy I'm going to tell you to stay away from the JD 2 cyl. diesel models. Most of these were ran hard until they fell apart then ran some more ! They just run with so many problems and were seldom fixed correctly.
I might say something like a MF 35 or 135 with a Perkins engine would be good to start on as parts for Perkins were about as cheap as they get.

In my opinion, I like the John Deere , 2020, 2520, 3020, 4020, 4030 type of tractor for the fact that they are collectors items as well as a very usable tractor that competes with todays tractors. I have all listed above then some.

Lanse

Don't listen to the rest of those guys. They have been on the other side of that fence to long!!

Go for it and ask her out when you get the next chance. Your only young once.
