Well we have a new reason for speculators to raise the price of gas even though this will not affect the refineries at all.

The Mississippi river is closed from New Orleans to the gulf. Has been since Wednesday because a tanker T boned a barge; breaking the barge in half and spilling over 400,000 gallons of #6 oil into the river.

While most oil is piped in from a offshore dock to our refineries all other ship traffic has been stopped.

Environmentalists will demand double hull, crash proof side beams, redundant boat pilots, sobriety testing of pilots, three trillion dollars in damages, and a cessation of all oil powered and oil carrying vessels. It will be in the courts for years.
 
shipping by river barge is the dumbest thing
going. the river has rail lines on both sides,
and unit trains can go from StPaul to New Orleans
in 2 1/2 days compared to 2-3 weeks by barge. The
goverment spends millions keeping the river
dredged and dams maintained, at public expense.
 

My impression is that barge traffic uses less energy, especially going downstream.

Not that it matters and just for interest, I remember someone in New Orleans telling me that a barge normally lasted about 30 years whether it was painted or not.

A tow of barges can move more product than you can realize. one barge on the Ohio moves 1800 tons. rail cannot compete with the tonage that can be moved on the river.
 
The NERVE of those tree huggers shutting down the river and demanding a clean-up! They're strangling BUSINESS!! I mean, it's ONLY 400,000 gallons...a drop in the barrel of what we use every day! Tell 'em to get a life!

Last month, the Valdez got off with $55m from a $3.3b judgement, the amount that Exxon had already banked for damage payout.

The judge said a company shouldn't have to pay more than they planned on paying.

If I could just get my hands around his neck for a second or two.
