Electric rates going up about 20% .OT

TVA is raising rates and the local suppliers are doing the same, what gives? TVA generates most of their power by hydroelectric and its been raining!

Our electric rates went up also. Wasn't there a fed law that made the electric companies have to buy electricity from windmill farms? That was the excuse given around here.

Electric rates here are on average 30% to 40% higher...

So, the electric cars must be taking too much power off the grid...

Yes it was settled and again the consumer got screwed. For some with electric heat the bill doubled, and roughly 30% increase for everyone else. Our fine state legislature got the utilities to give back around a hundred dollars to each customer and the rate increase stuck. For many the rebate wouldn't cover one month of the increase. Now the utilities are asking a additional 15-20% increase for transmission and infrastruture maintenance. This is what happens when a business is allowed to operate on a cost plus profit basis. Very little incentive to control costs because a good profit is guaranteed.

I'd like to know what the h#ll happened to mine this month! Not just the price, but the usage. The bill in July was for 38 days and I used 984 kwh. The one that came for August (July usage) was only 29 days, they both said "actual",this one was 1808 kwh! We were gone for a week of that time. I checked it a week after they did and again 2 weeks after,to the day,I'm on track to use just over 1000 for the month.Whatever the problem was,it must have healed itself.

only a bit over 7% of our electricity comes from hydro.
about 50% from coal which uses lots of diesel to mine.

20% is from Natural gas and a small percentage from oil.

A bit over 3% is from wind solar, etc.

this is figures from last March.

I don't understand why it makes any difference whether or not your power comes from hydro. A kilowatt-hour is a kilowatt-hour. Actually, hydro power is FAR more valuable on the open market than coal-generated power, because it can be used for peaking.

since this subject is open. i have always been curiosu what others use for KW. i have ranch house, 1600 sq ft, 2 people in it, keep house 70 degrees in summer and 68 in winter. gas heat with central air. peak of summer use 850 kw/month and dead of winter use 350 kw/month.

I also live in TVA"s power area. They did say the drought was partly to blame but I live close to one of their dams and looks like there"s plenty of water flowing down the river. They say the largest cost was the big increase in coal cost. Discussing this with coworkers the other day some says were selling a lot of coal to China. I think TVA should bring more nuclear power online and use less coal. Along with the 20% increase in electric rates, gasoline $3.50+,groceries up 20% to 30%and our insurance board just added a $25.00 increase in insurance premiums for fat employees. Something gotta give.

How much is a 20% increase in the cost of the electricity they generate..1/2 cent per kwh maybe.
But the consumer will get a 20% increase of their bill, several cents per kwh.

That on top of a 7% raise last
April. I seems that everyone gets a slice of the pie. The only problem is the pie never gets larger but the pieces do. Soon the pie will be gone. Whats really funny is that oil has dropped almost 25% but gasoline only 8%. Nuff said Henry

Lows at night in the 90's and highs up to 120, 1447 square foot house built in January of this year. Keep the temp at 79 to 80 degrees. From July 16 to August 15 this year we used [b:388ef37249]1574 KWH[/b:388ef37249]. Cost us $210.

House is 100% electric, no gas whatsoever...

Somebody's got to pay for all the new solar panels and windmills and all the new natural gas peak turbines that have to be built for when the wind don't blow or the sun don't shine. Global warming is going to destroy the planet you know if we don't pay massive new taxes that will fix the warming hoax. Just wait till "new tax for everything" gets elected and turns his wrath on the country for daring to elect a nnalert for two terms. We ain't seen nothing yet!

What is your KWH cost?. Mine here in Michigan is 11.4 cents per KWH. That is a with all taxes and fees figured it.

9.25 cents per kw/hr here. In a couple of years with the "time of day" meters. We are looking at 6.0, 9.0 and 12.6 cents per kw/hr.
Certainly cheaper than LP, gas or oil for hot water. Even cheaper to heat one's house with resistance electrical heat than run a petroleum burner.
Then a heat pump is cheaper again using 1/3 to 1/4 the energy for the same amount of heat.
Can't figure out why so many people are so loyal to their silly LP tanks.

I'm on REC and my rates have been at $.18 per KWH for several years. Actual cost per KWH is about $.05 but by the time you factor in membership fees, cost of service, taxes and all the other bulls**t items $.18 is what it comes out to.
Several from the co-op have argued this, and said I cannot calculate the cost this way, call it what you want but the bottom line is I divide the number of kilowatts I used by the $ amount I write the check for and that to me is my cost per KWH.

1574 KWH for $210 comes out to 13.3 cents per KWH.

I agree with previous post that said total bill divided by KWH equals cost per KWH. Whatever they want to call those extra fees and taxes is fine with me, but they add to the cost of a KWH in my world.

We're paying about 11.7 cents per KW/H here. We used 2000 KW/H for 62 days in the past 2 months...
about 70% or our electricity is generated by old king coal, and they're looking for another 15% right now I believe due to the cost increases for coal.
Kinda sad that they have to import coal when we sit on millions of tonnes of it and they won't mine it...

doesn,t matter who gets elected if we are going to get country back on its feet we have to pay some bills that have been building up. only way is to raise taxes or keep slipping back. Like Fram used to say pay now or later. pay now think of the interest we would save

sometimes that is what it is used for butafter working in steam plant for 30 years we also used them to peak loads Years ago we got power from dams in summer and paid them back in winter but those days are gone as not enough power at dams. Gas turbines were the answer for a while as were fast to build and bring up but high maintance and nat gas rose. they also have a short run time and then junked. You will allaways have steam to back up windmills and solar. nucular would be great if run to regulations but a bearcat if something happens

I just checked my rate for the last bill:...............17.27 Cents PER KWH.
Was 19.01 Cents PER KWH.
It will go up to that againg i'm sure.
Amount paid / KWH = 27.27 Cents KWH.
guido.

We are paying 5.9 for the electricity and 4.35 for transmission, losses and debt retirement. The crooks in government sold off the most profitable generating plants to their buddies. Then mined the assets out of the company with their legal firm fees.

Hello buickanddeere.
Our town has electric power plant that makes about 65 mgw at 69000Volts.
Peak demand about 108 mgw.
The power generated goes into the grid and the TWP.buys the electric from the grid.
They make money selling to the grid and selling to the comsumer, nice setup.
Guido.

Probably does not have anything to do with increased costs of keeping their fleet of maintenance trucks on the road, increased transportation costs for coal, poles, etc., or increasing costs for worker health care, wages, the price of copper and aluminum wire, and the increased costs of everything they buy. I suspect it is due to the high cost of food because of ethanol, maybe we can import some electricity from China to lower the price. Of course, that electricity would be poor quality and prone to premature failure. Or maybe I have read too many o/t posts.

The good news is EVEN with that 17/20% RATE INCREASE rate here in TN are still cheaper than 83% of the nations users. Ajustment was needed because of price increase in coal.
