O.T.--Ant--Identification

I live in N.W. Alabama. Years ago, when I was in south Alabama, we had Fire Ants. There were red colonies and black colonies. These ants were the size of Carpenter ants and had a sting like a wasp. They would build a mount 2 foot high and 3 foot in diameter in two days. They were a serious problem.
Everyone I know calls every ant they see "Fire Ant". All pesticides are labeled for fire ants. My 7 acres is infested with small ant mounds and the ants are 1/16" long. I call these pi**ants, not fire ants. I have found nothing that will control these pests. During dry weather, they are scarce but after a rain, they are everywhere. What is your description of a Fire Ant and what do I have?

Fire ants are teeny tiny, and sting or bite horribly. They make the mounds. You can't really get rid of them it seemed to me in FL, but just keep them poisioned back a bit.

The fire ants in S. Tx. are small and black in color. They build mounds especially after rains like we have had. They will sting the crap out of you and leave puss bumps where they do their thing. I have had the best luck in killing them out with a product called Demon. Small packs of a powder like substance you mix into water and pour on the mounds. Everything else just seems to move them and not kill them. Demon isn't cheap so it probably wouldn't be a good choice for a large area, only spot treatments.

Those Fire Ants will be here after we are extinct.. I had a place where a dam was leaking.(Loose connection on a pipe, once we dug down to it, thankfully) There was a fireant hill, where we started digging with the trackhoe. I made some measurements of the ant's nest in the dirt.. It was about 12 feet across, and 12 feet deep. shaped like a teardrop.. IMHO, nothing will ever eradicate them.. It seems the more we do to kill them, the more they take over.. I just ignore them, now..

Go to a website called: doityourselfpestcontrol.com
This will give you all info needed to kill any bug. You need to spray (heavily) to kill ants. Just get the right chemical, Tempo SC or Demon.

Get ahold of some Talstar or Bifenthrin for the mounds and spread out some Award bait, you won't have problems again for about a year.

I live in north alabama also and have fire ants. The best thing I"ve used is a white powder that I bought at the CO-OP. It smells terrible but works. Your supposed to sprinkle a teaspoon or two on the mound in early morning or late afternoon. I might add that we did"nt have fire ants this far north until a few years ago. They"ve seem to adapt to our climate.
