Neighbor has 500 bushel of wheat that is light and Cargil won't take it so wants to give it to me. I feed my own calves and he said I could use it for feed. He don't have cattle. I never heard of feeding livestock wheat so was wondering why its not done. Thanks

Around here Perdue, the chiken man, will substitute wheat for corn when he can't get enough corn. Go ahead should be fine.

Don't feed too much or it will turn to dough in their stomachs and you will have a plugged-up animal. Nofun.

First, light wheat probably has higher protein content. That is is it is not bleached. Great for chickens and hogs. But be very care full feeding it to cattle. It will gum up so to speak, and cause bloat You can mix a little in with other grain, but I recomend you stay clear away from it on any cattle. Feed it to a pig. Kenny- ex wheat grower and cow raiser.

Wait now , God Made these animals with different styles of Stomaches ,, its Ok for chickens and hoggs ,,But personally I would not use over 20% in cow feed ,, and Then that feed would supplement the main Cours ,, I agree with the other comments .. while we are thinking , I am about to Free Choice Grape squeezing spent mash to Cows ,, Any Thoughts or precautions ? , Thanx Jim

I don't think you should feed it to cattle. They need roughage like silage and hay. Their stomachs
may get plugged up. Check with a mill where they make flour. They may able to use it. Should bring a good price with bread at almost $4.00 a loaf. Hal

Wheat will be fine in cattle as long as it is mixed with other grains. We feed it to beef cattle and have fed it to dairy cattle. The mix was about a 1/4 wheat 1/4 oats and half corn. We also fed haylage( hay that is fermented like corn silage and free choice dry hay.
The beef cattle are getting half wheat corn mix or as it comes out of the bin as the wheat was dumped in the same bin and mixes as it drains out. then pasture along with dry hay again free chice. The hay will dilute the grain some even though it goes into the rumen. I should note we fed sodium bicarbonate to the diary herd to control the acid level.

Stay at 20 percent of total ration (or less) and it will be fine. As mentioned a mixture of oats/wheat and free cgoice of hay or pasture works well.

I think I need to know where you live so that I can open a bakery.

Where I live the cheap bread is $1.19 per loaf at one store and still 99¢ at another.

Makings for homemade are around 50¢ per loaf and that includes oven energy costs.

Kansas, home of cheap living.

I'm interested in how your grape mash will work out. Have no grapes, so can't help you, but sounds interesting.

I tend to feed a lot of strange stuff to the cattle - mostly grazing. Turniups, clover, oats regrowth.

Keeps things interesting.

Wheat is a good corn stretcher - like they say, keep it around 20% or so of the grain, and will work well.

Price of wheat is generaly why it is not fed. You need to feed a balanced ration tho and not all one type of grain.
