Fuel Problems

Bought a Series III D17, 24 years ago. Little use lately, after quitting dairy. Just finished making a mounted Danish tooth FC for it- tractor refused to run steady. Found dirt plugging the filter inlet, ran 10 minutes, same problem. Figured the tank needed a good steam cleaning, so took it off. Gauge wasn't working either, so took that off. Peeked inside to check rust......fished out a 15/16 inch combination wrench, Gedore brand, made in India! Nothing I ever bought!

Reminds me of a story i've told before. Dad had an Oliver 66 that was doing the same thing. There was a popsycle stick in the bottom of the tank that kept drifting over the hole.

Had a Farmall A that i restored & found a craftsman 10 in. flat blade screwdriver in gas tank, i fished it out, seems like they would have known they dropped it in there. Probably checking gas level. Also Air cleaner cap had been shot several times with a 22 rifle.

We had an engine that would start up and idle just fine and then when you'd open her up and want to do something, she'd quit. We adjusted everything. Kept right on doing it. We finally found a grease rag in the gas tank. It would let just enough fuel through to get it started but once you put a load on it...

Years ago, when I was 40 years younger, I was a snowmobile nut. Bought a new one and it was a dandy, could outrun everyone. But that came to an end. It would run for about 20 yards and quit. (Wanted to go to the barn, I guess.) Finally found some guy knocked my off the pedestal by putting a piece of a match stick in the fuel line. It would float up for a bit then be sucked down into the fitting and shut me down. Think I know who did it too, he's likely the guy that always came in second!!!!

My Dad used to tell about a gag they pulled on a professor at Sterling College. Somebody put a condom in the professor's car's gas tank, the car would run, then not run. Eventually the condom broke down and the car ran OK again.

At some point the gas tank was taken from the car and cleaned out, the remains of 2 condoms were found. Apparently Dad's group wasn't the only one to play this trick on him.
