OT Opinions on KN air filters

Anyone have experiance with these? Is there any real difference in performance? I've been wondering about them for some time now. I know it varies from one car or truck to the next but is it worth it in the long run?

i think there is a lot of differing aspects to them. Main one would be how are you on general maintenance? Who does your serviceing? Local garage or dealer? with everything computerized it seems like it would be hard to justify cost for mpg claimed to be gotten from them but then its your money. How do you feel about cleaning an air cleaner and maybe putting a hole in it?

Seriously? If you put a hole in it cleaning it, then you have no business under the hood anway. I dont know if they increase MPG, but buying one for $40 to $60 bucks once and re-using it is cheaper than buying an air filter ever 10 to 15k in the dusty conditions I live in. Had mine for years and plenty of trouble free miles. Alot of folks that are against them, I think, just dont like the fact that they cost more than they want to pay.

I agree with you here. They are very very easy to clean and nearly impossible to screw up. Yeah, the milage thing might be kinda a "Weisel Word" to sell it but some people swear they get better performance and milage by them. And yes, In the long run, I think they will save you money. We run them in all our our semis for this reason, cleaning. That is definately cheaper. However, be careful with your warranty if its a new vehicle. I already had one mistake there with my 08 f250. Not cheap

If you are looking for better fuel mileage, you will be disappointed. Don't know any other reason to install one. Synthetic motor oil is money better spent.

There have been tests done on all kinds of air filters and although the K&N's flow more air they do so by letting more dirt through than most stock filters. Kinda a 6 of one and half a dozen of the other with performance adding air filters. Same goes for cold air intakes. Very few are worth the money! Most actually still pull hot air from under the hood.

I kinda agree with you, more airflow at the expense of filtering.Anybody got some facts on if it does let more dirt in? bill m.

Wife and I drive almost identical vehicles. Son has one too. (Chevy Blazer) Mine has a K&N, came with it... Others have conventional filters. Gas milage is almost identical with all three vehicles.

I don't know if they have changed any the last ten or so years or not but there was a shop here that started installing them. They voided the warranty on several diesel trucks and the shop ended up eat'n several new engines. Buddy of mine had them put one on about a 99 powerstroke, blew up in less than two months. His was the one of about 6 trucks the shop put new diesels in after installing the K&N.

After what he as several others went through, don't think I want one.

On the other hand, my aunt's husband has one of them souped up ford lighting pick ups and he has had one on it for several years with no problems. He just dirves on the interstate and has never dirven it in dusty conditions.

I have had a K&N on my "96 Z71 for 7 years, same filter, no problems. Lately put one on my Harley and know that one gets more air flow. You need to keep them oiled when in dusty conditions.

Have one on my 2000 expedition, haven't noticed much difference in mileage, might be have just a tiny bit more pep but thats debatable also. This is just my opinion but I think that the new computerized vehicles compensate for whatever the air flow is to keep the ratio right. To get better mileage or better performance you need to get into the computer. Does save money on replacements though. Good luck, Mike

One thing to remember, they let more air IN. Thats good if your wanting power for a short time.
Pulling, racing etc.
Next thing to think about, more air means less filtration, less filtration means more dirt, more dirt means cylinder scoring.
My opinion go with a good paper filter with the hogs hair on it. I use fram air filters for that reason.
I ran a K&N for a while and got 0-nil-zippo mileage or HP out of it.
I never thought about the air in/dirt in until the old man at the (real parts) store explained it out.

I get a tiny bit of gas mileage and a tiny bit of throttle response. Wal-mart doesn't sell them anymore because they're too expensive for the minimal benefits provided.

I still wash mine in soap water and spray light oil on it, but i haven't cleaned it in about 40000 miles, whoopsie.

I'll probably go back to paper air filters if I get a visible hole in the K&N.

I'm not a K&N fanatic, neither do I do all those stupid performance chip upgrades.

I save A HEIL of a lot of money by keeping things stock.

However, the only thing performance on my ranger pickup is a gibson exhaust muffler in place of the boxy muffler. I'm big on exhaust. (especially straight pipes)

In addition, there isn't much "suck" in most newer vehicles air intake.., a LOTTT of the air is recirculated in these newer cars through EGR, CCV, and fuel vents. So really, a K&N filter would just do basically nothing like a regular air filter.. there isn't a phenomenal amount of "suck" on a newer vehicle.

They aren't recommended for dusty conditions. You wouldn't notice any difference except like others said, more flow equals less filtering. I wouldn't use one. Dave

I offer to supply K&N filters with the custom intake systems I build primarily due to the fact they offer so many shapes and configurations. I run one in my daughter's 92' Eldorado (211,560 miles) and my 89' F-150 (209,000 miles) and none of the synthetic oil is used either. No problems yet.

Google "Duramax air filter test" and look at the results. The K & N versus an AC Delco plugged up in half the time and let 44 times as much dirt into the engine with about a 2% increase in airflow. Kind of a no-brainer.

Gotta agree with you 100%, Buick!

In normal use, (except for race track acceleration or "balls to the wall" trailer towing) I don't think folks realize how low airflow is in the average vehicle, compared to the max seen during stunt driving.

VERY good "un-biased" report.............We NEED more of these types of studies done to the overpriced products on the market...........

I'd LOVE to see a study like that done to the synthetic oils presently on the market..............

A major engine builder for dirt track racing engines(high power 800hp stuff, not street stocks) says that he can tell when an engine comes in for a rebuild due to the increased cylinder bore wear. He reccommends the WIX paper filters. You can see the difference yourself on these applications by the buildup of dirt and grime in the throttle body of the carb on a K&N equipped race engine.

As an interesting side note, the same engine builder ran a chassis dyno test on some cars after a 100 lap dirt track race...said the K&N cars were down 50HP compared to paper filters due to the amount of dust and dirt that were attracted to the oil on the filter. Tests run with clean filters showed no HP loss for a new paper filter versus a clean K&N.

So yep, when they're clean, a K&N(or similar) filter will give ya an extra pony or two over time as long as you are meticulous on your maintanance...but it may not be worth it in the long run.
