O/T car over heating problem

Wife's car, a 1981 Chev Citation is over heating. Just check it out a little bit and the upper radiator hose where it goes into the thermostat was sort of looking like a balloon. My thinking is that the thermostat is bad and of course now so is the hose. My question is am I thinking right or maybe there is something else I'm over looking??
Thanks.
Ya the car is a piece of junk but at least it still gets her where she needs to

Well I think you are right. The hose could go bad without the thermostat sticking maybe, but on my Chevy pickup the thermostat doesnt like to open up once in a while, tried one from ORiellys and it was worse so I put the old one back in and a manual guage. It gets up there sometimes when it first opens.

I pulled the thermostat out and did a pan test on it. I got the water up to 210 degrees and it did not open. I had a new one laying around in my shop in my spare parts and installed it and now the car does not over heat. Still need to replace the hose but I cut the bad area off so at least she can get by for a day or 2

Those engines are bad for cracking heads even without overheating the engine. I got 3 used heads from a junk yard and all 3 were cracked. I had to buy a new bare head and the cost was $500.00. The 81 Citation had been used by the FBI and I bought it at an auction in 85. Hal

If I remember right the Citation is an exact copy of the Cadilac Cimmeron with some different bends in the body sheet metal.

Ya the 4 cylinder ones where bad about that but this one is a V-6 and was owned by my mom before we got it. It has always been dependable up till it started to do this over heating but I think I have that problem fixed now.

Turn on the A/C and make sure that the cooling fan is kicking on....it may be that in addition to the hose/thermostat issue, there could be an electric fan issue.

These are great cars- my mom and dad drove 'em for years

That part of the cooling system hasn't worked like it should for years so it has a switch to turn on the cooling fan and it was running but still over heated. New thermostat fix the problem

I always wanted one with the V6, but never found one for sale. I think the 2.5L engines had the head cracking problem. I had a 1985 Citation too with the 2.5L engine and never had any head problems with it. They were pretty good on gas too. The paint was in sad shape on it from sitting under a tree for years. Hal
