Auger laid over

Last night we had a 70 MPH wind that laid our auger over. It's a 71' X 13" tube so it's no lightweight. There doesn't appear to be any damage to the tube or hopper and the cable braces can be straightened out, but how do we get this thing upright again without damaging it? Anybody have any experience in this field?

It was set up on a tall bin so it was pretty much all the way up, and I did have it tied to the top safety ring on the bin, because high winds were forecast but the wind still took it, and the safety ring too. Thinking back, I should have cabled it to a tractor. I guess we learn from experience huh? Jim

Having not seen it, I would probably consider setting it up on stands (saw horses or cribbing) and remove the wheels from the attachment points.
(a loader would be very handy)
Then roll the tube and reattach the wheels under it!
Good luck, JimN

Boy Jim you must have really soft ground. I had a 10-71 blow over acouple years ago, had to replace all three tubes and flighting. If you want to turn it in to the insurance, call them before you atempt anything.

It did fall on soft, level water saturated grass. The cable braces are dug in pretty far. The insurance man is getting a call first thing in the morn. We have to keep the combines rolling. The people I harvest with do have another auger but it's a 111'X 13" with a 17' wide wheelbase and I don't even know if we can get it from their farm to mine. Jim

Concidering how important it is to you I would concide calling a crane company. That way you can slowly and carefully stand it back up with something that can get high enough.

Cranes aren't that costly for a 4 hr call.

Call a local excavation business, have them bring out an excavator and lift it back up. If possible crank it back down before or during the lift. Probably be cheaper than a crane company. Usually about $100-150/hour and probably $500 min but most likely insurance will pay. Good luck and take some pictures so we can see!

It was not that big but one went down last spring beside my house. Was laid across part of my driveway. Nighbor who farms that ground came over and we stood it back up with a telehander. We were able to raise the bucket over it and hook chains to the frame on the far side and stand it up that way with out hurting the braces.

Good luck.

Dave

A heavy truck wrecker with an extendable boom might be able to do it. Goodluck. Armand P.S. Please post pictures of the recovery if possible.

If I remember to have the camera along I'll take a few shots - IF the insurance co. doesn't junk it. We got down on our hands and knees for a real close look and it hit pretty hard even though it's still straight. The flighting made indentations in the tube when it slammed down. The dealer it was bought from has several cranes of different sizes and probably the knowledge to go with it. The only question to this scenario is $$$$$. Jim
