Bales and bales

Neighbors and the guys up by the elevator today have lots and lots of big round bales around. Looks like they are baling both the corn stacks and the bean straw!

Huh? What's that used for? Am I losing money by letting it rot and re-fertilize my fields?

No way to know for sure without checking TDN, but generally it's very low quality feed. I've seen some that actually showed a net-loss for food value, i.e., it took more energy to digest it than it provided.

Some guys use it for roughage in the forage. Other guys use it as bedding.

Around here cattle feeders are using a mixture of ground corn stalks and ethanol by-products for feed. Jim

If it is used for bedding, it goes back to the field in a few months, in an 'enhanced' condition, so nothing is lost.
