MF285 Internal Hydraulic Pump Questions

I posted this on the Massey board also.

My 285 has 2 internal pumps, one to operate the 3 pt lift and one that operates the remotes and the Bushhog loader. According to my mechanic, the pump that operates the loader needs to be replaced. The dealer quoted about $800 for a replacement pump.

My questions are: Is there a company that rebuilds these pumps? Is the $800 price reasonable? Do you have te split the tractor to change out the pump?

Any help you guys can give me will be appreciated.

After market pumps aren't much better. Around 680.00. Should be able to take pumps out after lift cover and pto shaft is removed. Need to check a IT manual to be sure.

Not sure about the 285, but I do know the 165, 175 and 180 have to be split for pump removal when they have 2 pumps. I would expect the 285 to be the same.

Sounds like the internals on my 265. I had to tear into it for a pto clutch rebuild. The tractor will need to be split. The pump is driven by the shaft that drives the pto clutch which is just beyond it.

My uncle had a 285 2wd rops on on the farm while I was growing up. In the spring we'd strap the duals and front end weights on her and pull a 12' disk with a spring tooth harrow. Probably wasn't good for her condidering in the twenty years we had her we had to have the engine overhauled three times and the rear end rebuilt at least once. Best thing to do in your situation (other than scrap it since the 285 was not MFs best model) would be to split the tractor and replace all the internals that are showing any kind of wear or could break down in the near future. If your mechanic is experienced with MF he will know exacatly what goes wrong and when. Most MF mechanics will tell you (including my dad) when you split an MF to replace a hydraulic pump that doesn't work, go ahead and replace the one that is working as well, this will decrease the likely hood that you'll have to split the tractor agin. Believe me the cost of splitting a tractor adds up in a big time hurry.
