Electrolysis Question - Hard Water?

Hello All.

Im thinking of trying this electrolysis thing out to help me clean up some of my various tractor parts. (In particular the nose off of a few Farmalls).

However, the water we have is pretty hard (lots of calcium). There is a softener, but Im not sure if thats better or worse to have the sodium ion in there instead of the calcium.

Does anyone know how the water quality will affect the electrolysis process?

I've seen this process in action,I'm impressed with the results.Process was used with well water, without any problems. If in question, use distilled water.Process also works in reverse,if you want to make a new part look old.

Pure water (distilled) is not a very good conductor of electricity. It needs minerals in it to be an electrolyte. Plain old well water is fine because you will add much more to it to make it go. JimN

I always assumed the lye that would be added to the water (or washing soda) is what will break down into the necessary electrolyte. I just havent worked out the chemistry enough at this point to figure out if the extra calcium ions in the water would end up coming out of solution on my parts or on the electrode.

If its the electrode, thats not as big a deal since I can take it out, scrape it, and then put it back in and there wont be more calcium in the water. If it ends up plating out on my parts, well thats sorta the opposite of what I am shooting for....
