Head removal on I.H.

I am trying to remove the head from a W4 International, and I can't seem to get it loose. I think I have all bolts and nuts removed, carb. is removed, etc., but it isn't even the slightest bit loose yet. Is there any tricks that would help me? Also, there is a cover on the left side of the engine block, and I don't know what that is for. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks

If, indeed you have all of the head bolts removed, including any holding rocker arms on etc, try bumping the starter. Of course if the motor is stuck, you can't do this, but you might be able to run a compressor line to one spark plug hole, if the valves are closed tight.

Cram some rope in there through the spark plug hole and then spin the engine. The rope doesnt compresses and when it cant compress any more it puts upward pressure on the head, pushing it up. Gotten a head off that way in the past like that.

The rope trick works, but it also may take a little tunking (NO walloping!) with a fair-sized beater/hammer against wood block to break any sealant between the gasket and the head and block.

The cover on the left is for access to the water jacket.

in many cases I have stuck the wooden handle of my hammer in an exhaust or intake port and gave it a bump with my hand not hammer even though in theory the wood should give before the head but these hickory handles are hard. before using any brute force make sure all bolts are out even if you think they don't hold it down loosen it so if it does it will be free and you can take it the rest of the way out if needed
