Fire Damaged 1948 Farmall Cub Tractor

Some kids recently set fire to my tobacco barn that had one of my cultivating Farmall Cub Tractors in it. The fire was so severe that the tires were completely burned off. My question is, is it worth restoring or will there be too many internal problems that it is better to "junk" it? I have spare parts from other tractors(tires, starter, radiator, etc.) or with the fire heat would there be too much internal damage.

It's your call, but I imagine that ALL of the seals will be gone and it is entirely possible that even the castings have been compromised.

did the fire burn out or was it put out with water? If the fire was still burning and squirted with water prob. alot of cracked warped and damaged parts. many internal parts will be fine to reuse to build another for another tractor build.

Thanks for the quick reply. The fire was put out with water by the Fire Dept. so it might be better to just look for a reasonable replacement and keep the internal parts as you suggest. Thanks

The engine is probably ok except for the seals. The water and oil helps keep it and the transmission etc from over heating.
I had a 4000 Ford that had the tires burned off. I had to relace almost all the seals. I was able to save the sheet metal.

Appreciate the quick reply. You're probably right on your assesment. What internal parts do you think are salvageable and worth tearing down the tractor?

I think I would remove the head and the oil pan from the engine and have a look. Also pull the cover off the tranny and take a look. All of it might be salvageable, or it might all be toast.

Joe,

The barns roof and beams fell around the tractor burning to the point that all soldering in the radiator melted along with the tires. The metal (although not externally visable) may have been warped or cracked as others are suggesting. What do you think?

Did they catch the kids that started it? I'd be hooking their butts to a harrow and make 'em pull that through your tobacco fields for a couple of years.......

Long ago I was told that tractors were rebuild candidates if the fire was of tractor origin and scrap if from an external fire such as from a building due to more intense heat.

I'm with you!

The county built a low income housing project next to our farm and constructed a chain link fence but that was only to keep me and my uncle in! No, a couple of people said they saw kids running from the fence when they saw the barn go up but no one would come forward and saw where they went.

Once this housing market staightens out were moving to the Springfield Co. of tidewater Va. where you can still be a farmer. The Baltimore / Washington corridor is not the place I grew up in.

Ron,
I'm in Severn Md. which is located equidistant between Baltimore and Washington DC. I'm taking the row cultivators off (putting on another one) and had the gas tank off before the fire so that's in good shape. If still interested make an offer.

I've been using a 630 JD for 32 years that had been turned over and burned up. It has served me well. Barn fire might be different, but ALL the tires were burned off of this tractor, along with hoses, steering wheel, well, anything that would be consumed by flame. I overhauled the engine, replaced everything that was destroyed by flame/heat. I never got new sheetmetal for it. Seems the price was always more than I was willing to give. It's my favorite tractor - it sat in a fence row for nine years before I bought it - there's nine years of rest that all of the other 630's probably missed. . .

Agree. I beleive my money would be better spent buying another one and selling the other for whatever I can get (metal salvage or useable parts). If I would have found out who they were that set the fire I would have donated the tractor in the middle of the night to their parents home as a front yard ornament!
