welder generator

Looking at welder generator combos. Probobaly will get either a miller or lincon, cant find hobart w/ ac dc both. How many hours are these gas motors (onan, kohler, ect) good for? most gensets have about a 16 or 20 hp. motor on them, so... I have seen some units w/ 5000+ hrs, seems kinda high on a small gas motor, or at least to me anyhow. Any thoughts???

If carefully maintained and serviced, that is still 1/2 of the way to worn out. They do run at more constant speeds, and are less subjected to durt and shock loads. JimN

I have had my G7000 lincoln for many years. used it on my dozer repairs. In 2006 used it 2 weeks for power in an ice storm. Just finished welding lumber racks made of 4 inch pipe last week. As long as I keep the condensate out of the gas tank with a little gas additive (heat)it has been a fine machine.

Well. Kohler rates their command engines at approx 2500 hours, If you keep the oil changed at 50 hours, use good oil ,keep air filter clean, good, clean fuel, their is no telling how many hours you will get. just like a car engine some get 125,000, some get 200K and then you have the people who take care of them get 500K out of them. But in my opinion, and that is what this is, at 5K, I would not put a lot money in them, yes, I know they run in cleaner conditions, but that is a lot of hours for a naturally aspirated engine. now if were EFI, then that is an altogether different thing.

Check a harbor freight store.. I have seen hobart welder / genny with ac/dc on them.. 10kw on the genny.

We have one at work on our service truck. it burns a rod as good as any plug in welder..

Hi sparktrician,

A new Lincoln Ranger 250, electric fuel pump, 1.2gal/hr full load, 250a DC 100% duty cycle, multi-process (stick,Mig, Tig), all Cu wound, full 10kw w/11kw surge, $3400 delivered.

Any comparable machine with 1500hrs plus, $1500 but that ain't gonna happen here. More like $2000 too $2500.

IMO, I'd pay the $3400 and get a machine that's new and I know will handle what I want done.

I would NOT even consider the Hobart brand even with Miller buying them. Hobart has always been a sub-standard machine other than there 600a machines.

Thanks for the input. I have found a miller in Ia. it is used, on a trailer, and can get a new lincon for 2995.00, no leads though...Been looking around, and was just curious about engine longevity. Thanks to all the repliers!!!

Purchased my Lincoln Ranger 8 from our local welding supplier.

The welder was a rental & not quite a year old, had the factory style running gear so it could be wheeled around & I payed $1800 less cables.

Look around...

Miller and Hobart are owned by Illinois Tool Works.Hobart is the lower priced line.Friend has a Hobart mig,I have a Miller, both do good work.

I doubt if you or anybnody else is going to use it enought to worry about engine life.
As long as the oil, fuel and air is clean. And the engine isn't operated too cold or too hot. It will outlast most of here on this site.

Hi 36Coupe,

You would have to use a machine for 8hrs/day and have a Miller, Hobart and a Lincoln Pipe Liner available for comparison too understand what I"m talking about when I say Hobart can"t hold a candle to the other machines.

The Lincoln pipeliner has the finest arc stability that"s ever been produced. What this means is you don"t have to fight to control the arc or the molten puddle as you weld, a huge advantage.
