I bought a portable handheld digital audio recorder. It uses SD cards for memory. The book says make sure the SD card is formatted. How do I find out if a card is formatted?
I have a digital camera that uses SD cards and it"s manual doesn"t say anything about formatting the card and I"ve never given that a thought before and the camera works just fine. I also have an external card reader attached to a USB port on my computer that accepts SD and some other memory cards. That card reader"s software doesn"t mention anything about formatting cards either.

I can give you a general response that may point you in the right direction... Basically to format an SD card, you put it in that card reader attached to your USB port on your computer, and then wait until the SD card pops up on your screen. If you right click on the icon it creates, there should be an option for "format". This will clear everything from it. Sometimes it is trickier and more involved than that, though... To format an SD card should only take like 30 seconds, tops, I believe. Just make sure it's your SD card you've selected for formatting...

Pop the card into the computer"s media reader, or cable the device to a USB port with the card installed. If you can read and write files to and from the card, you"re good to go.

Most recorders have a format command in their menu and it should do no harm to format your blank SD card, even if already formatted. If the card contains data, formatting it will kill those files.
