Winter battery care

I was just curious to see what the proper winter battery care is. I have a 5th wheel camper trailer, 4 wheelers, Farmall A w/belly mower, riding lawn mower, etc. I will not be using these durning the winter months. Can I just get some sort of battery trickler? I was looking thru harbor freight the other day & found a "battery float charger", will this do the job?
 
Hey rustin, I have 6 of those float chargers on my equipment and they work fine.( I had one fail,The small black box went bad) I need to get a few more when I get a chance.
 
An 89 cent hydrometer can be used to monitor batteries condition monthly.I wont trust my buildings and equipment to china battery chargers or maintainers.I got 4 years from my bandsaw mill battery ,just checked the charge monthly.Could have gotten another year from the battery but it started to give uneven charge readings.Dont buy sealed batteries,you cant check state of charge.
 
I do nothing to my batteries. As long as they had a charge when I parked the equipment, they work fine in spring. I've got 10yr old tractor, 8yr old lawn mower, and 2yr old car batteries that work fine with this labor saving approach. We usually only see temperatures down to -10F or so, you might need a different approach if it gets colder than that.
 
I have tried about every way to mantain the batts through the winter months. I just leave them alone and put a charger on them every 6-8 weeks. The tractor that I don"t use in the winter I just start it about every month or so and let it run for a while. This approach has worked ok for me and the batts seem to last as long as one could expect. DoubleR
 
We do nothing. If there happens to be a unusually warm day during the winter we try to start everything up and let it run until warmed up. Some tractors sit for six months without being touched and fire right up come spring. Generally get 5 years or more out of a set of batteries in the big diesels...
