80,000 miles no heat, dealer said $1000.00 to fix(heat controll door in dash, soething like that)...question is,has anybody had this problem and is there a quick fix, and cheaper. thanks for any HELP!

I have an old air cooled engine army vehicle. The internet wanted $300 for the correct gasoline heater for it. I bought a coleman tent heater that runs on a stove bottle of propane for $50 at wallyworld. It has a CO shutoff, so I don't have to worry about sleepytime driving, runs for about 15 hrs on a bottle of fuel ($2.50). Only thing I had to do was to fabricate a secure bracket to hold it. Only caution is that if you get in a wreck, and somebody's face goes into the screen, He'll earn a new nickname!

That was a common problem, had to do with the flapper door that steers the air to one set of vents or another breaking. Dealer should have a Tech Service Bulletin on it, I believe. A grand sounds awful high.

they have to remove the a/c evap and the heater coil to get to it along with a lot of the dash
mine was done under warrenty at about 34000 miles
good luck
Ron

I believe I would have to fix that myself.1000 dollars is a lot of money for a heater door, whats he saying 2 days of labor,or one day for 2 people?Or is it just slow in the shop and he needs to make payroll off of your heater door job?You might try calling another Dodge place and ask them.

Had a similar problem with a new 1990 Chevy Silverado p/u. Cold in winter, hot in summer, only the dealer never could find problem. Traded it for a Ford-problem solved. Only took GM another 18 years to go bankrupt.

You have to do what he's talking about before you can believe how much of a job it is. Dealers get $85-$90 dollars per hour and believe me, its a 12 hour job. I had to do this on my Lincoln Navigator because I refused to pay the Ford dealer $1000 dollars to change a $24 dollar cheap plastic blend door. Was a horrible job I hope I never have to do again. The pics of the bench only show 1/2 the parts I had to take out. Console, air bags on both sides, entire dash, steering column. The entire vehicle is built around the blend door. Poor engineering at its best.

Well Yes,that looks miserable.I could take a sawzall and cut the whole front end off of that, mig weld another one back in,in less than 8 hours probably.Somebody needs to come up with a better way on that, like someplace where you can cut into it,fix it,then glue a patch on or something.

Not sure if this could be the same problem, but here was mine: 2001 Dodge diesel: In hot weather, I would hear the flap shut, and AC would start blowing HOT air. It was under warranty, so I took it in. It was a plastic cam that ran the flap, that had broken. They ordered the part, I went back, and they had it fixed in less than an hour.. has worked fine since. Common problem, I was told..

friend of mine had it done to a lincoln as well...pretty sure it cost about the 1000 dollar range as well. Work truck had the same prob 00 chevy only that little door would get stuck in the summer time when you had the a/c on and turned it a little warmer. Door would warp and stick. Had to let it set and all get the same temp and would work again for a bit. Either freeze or sweat

Yeah...your felt like seal on the door is gone. More than likely came out in little fluffy chunks and you did not notice it.
Problem is, some it is still in spots on the door and allowing air to pass thru when shut.
Remove the blower motor...just drop it down, and see if you can feel the door thru the motor opening. If you can, just rub off the remainder with your fingers. It will not be perfect, but it will be a little better.
My 96 has had a bad seal for years. I just put it in the position for floor and dash vents most of the time. I only defrost when it really needs it.
Summer is the worst cause I can't get full AC out the dash vents...it comes out on the floor some too.
Good luck...it's just a cheap plastic thing.

I did something similar on my Mekur. $300 retail heater blower motor. You were supposed to discharge the AC remove the AC unit and heater core under the dash just to replace the fan. You could see the blower motor through an access panel in the cowl but couldn't remove the motor through that hole. I cut the hole larger and replaced it that way. It was ugly but the car was old enough with few enough years left that I didn't care.

It sounds like the same problem that some Jeeps have. The plastic hinge on the flapper breakes and the flaps stay in the air condition position which blocks the heat from passing through. It is a $1,200 fix at the dealer. However I did a search and found a site that shows how to cut a small hole in the plastic heater cover and install an after market repair kit.
The cost of the kit is somewhere around 150.00 For a jeep. I am not sure there is one for a Dodge, but I bet there is.
