hard work on the farm

I knew a pretty girl 27 years ago that detasseled corn, we met at Grange Camp, her name was Leslie Welk from Low Point IL. She told me how she detasseled corn when she was just a young teenager. I would call her corny after I found out that's what she done.

If any one knows where she may be, tell her that John Bossler says Hi from Highland, IL. I use to have her address but lost it years ago. I would love to talk and see her again! 1986 was the last time we spoke to each other!
If you know her, here is my email you should give her; [email protected]

I sure got off the subject folks, sorry, but this reminded me of this young lady!

Yea, mostly bad thoughts are associated with that job. Neighbor had a small private seed corn and oats operation and used the local teenagers to help with that awful itchy and sweaty job. Break off the tassels just right not too short not damage the stalk so it could receive the pollin from the male. My brothers actually did more than I but when I heard the girls on the crew got quite skimpy clothed by mid afternoon I had to go help a few days also. I can honestly say that the "sights" were not worth the pain. Few years later they built a machine high boy with choppers that went down the row and cut the tassels off. Much better idea. I will rather walk soybean fields all day in the hot sun pulling weeds that detasseling. Migraine

My initials may be J.B. but one good thing they don't stand for John Bobbit!

Hope I'm safe if I ever meet her again!

Roger on the skimpy clothes. My wife told me that when she detassled, some of the gals (her included) took their tops off completely. And that was 50 years ago.

She said they were mostly hid in the cornfield, but by mid afternoon they simply didn't care.

Detasseled two years, 1984-85, 14-15 years old, grew up on a farm. Detasseled corn south on Columbus Nebraska Garst Corn. First day out was stuck with the misfits, one kid was staying with his Grandma, he was from California and asked what the plant was, had no clue the difference from corn to weeds. Up at 3 am drove 45 minutes to get on bus by 5 and in the field by 6. One field the growers pumped liquid manure from chicken barn through the gated pipe, and everybody asked what stunk as they walked through the mess up to their knees. The girl that usually sat with me was down to her nnalert one morning, wasn't sitting with me that day, and same girl's mom drove her 4 miles to the bus with her purse on top of the car luckily the car had a luggage rack so she didn't loose it. Sister that drove us almost rolled the car by swerving for a rabbit, then had to wake up a farmer to pull car from the ditch at 4 am. Can't imagine girls stripping and not getting cut up from the leaves. Walked most of the time, rode a Hagie machine a couple times. Hard on the ankles. chris
