what are you working on?

I pulled the 4520 in the shop a couple of weeks ago. Had a little weeping around the oil cooler and I found the water pump was starting to leak. Going to replace the belts and all the hoses. Got new parts to tighten up the steering. Get it back together, change engine oil and filter, change the hydraulic oil and filter, put in some new anti freeze and be ready to go. Seems like lately have spent alot of time with the cattle and not enough in the shop. Still a warm place to spend a cold day.

So what are you guys working on?

I have too many projects going at once! Working on two tractors for other people, a John Deere B and a Farmall 460. Trying to get my model T Ford put together in between time, also making a pickup box trailer.

Lanse. If you have a IH mag, the wires are wrong. (I think your firing order is 1342)
your mag turns CW looking from the cap end forward. thus it is wired 1243
and should be:
2-1
4-3
looking at it. JimN Just check it, I do not know for sure where you timed it.

Rewiring 1956 JD 60, installing correct shifter lever and then probably sandblast and paint 801 hitch. Not much but don't have alot of time for it right know.

Bill, Spent most of my Christmas vacation cutting trees and picking up brush from the ice storm that went on past you. Since then, I had to go back to work (with jury duty) this week, so just catching up on my YTMag! Jim

Gary, that's one fine 57 that's one of the 50's chevies I never had but always wanted and also the 58 348 Impala too. You've gotter lookin good fire us some pictures of the finish product when you're done. I'm takin the winter off in my shop doing some computer work here in the house.

A W4 I.H. in between plowing snow, or unthawing frozen water pipes, or cutting enough firewood to try and keep warm, or working with the cattle and getting ready to start calving next month, or spending time with my new daughter, or working a full time job off the farm!

Case Dc4 .. got the oil draining from the rear-end and trans. , getting new brake linings on and checking other leaks...

Trying to get my JD 70 back together. Have to put on the power steering pump. Put the fuel shutoff back in the gas tank and hook up gas lnie and should be ready to see if it will run. Shed is too big to heat, so only work on it when it's above freezing. Chris

Workin' on my shop accually. got it all cleaned out (except the 2 tractors) so that i can insulate it and heat it. then i can get somthing done on my JD 720 diesel. get the pony running and get the main engine running good. needs a headgasket and probly has a stuck exauhst valve since it only runs on 1. then go through the pump to see if that is why there is diesel in the oil. otherwise been workin' on an Allis WC. that needs a complete overhaul. then i think the 4010 is coming in this summer to fix the pto pins that are broke and any other little leaks.

It's more like what should I be working on. Before next spring I need to replace or repair the radiator on my A/C model M, also replace the track, and sprocket on one side. Right now I am playing nurse for my wife. Today she had surgery on her shouder, and is about as helpless as a one arm paper hanger. Hope she heals quick. I only have 4 days of clothes, and 5 days of dishes. Stan

Gary you made my day, did one excatly like your's. Have owned 7 57's, only have a 4 door HT left, (2nd owner). Great looking job going there, send more pics when you get a chance.

I am putting together a 9N Ford, but so far we haven't found all the parts for it. The owner died from a stroke in March. Most of it was in his shop but not all. He had sheds full of tractors restored and for parts & his son is still looking. Also have 2 F12's apart & going to try to make one out of the two.

I'd like to work on this but it would be too hard to move into shop. It will be a IH WD-9 high crop. I am currently working on the front end.

Just finished fixing a gas leak on Grandpa's Ford 631 and somehow moved enough stuff around to fit it in the barn. Got the power turned back on so I could air up tires and such so I could shuffle all the equipment around. Nothing major, but stuff that needs to get done. As for stuff that should be getting done, I would hate to even think about it.

OK I'm jealous. You all have clean shops and time. I really need to rebuld the engine in a TW35 but my heart says that a crankshaft replacement needs to be done on the JD 50 as well as a pony motor clutch bearing on a JD 70D. I can't even walk through the shop much less tear a tractor down. Any advice on organizing a shop slob would be appreciated.

S99,
Never did try to heat the whole shop; Wire, tarp, volleyball poles, and torpedo heater screened in where I needed to be. Sometimes you just can't wait for nature to globally warm things.

I am replacing the radiator on the 1957 JD 620 and restoring a 1955 JD 60 high seat standard for the 2009 New York JD Expo. The 60 JD Tractor is the feature tractor.

Just finished up putting this electric control valve on my 730. Bought the valve from Surplus center and fabricated everything else. I even made the control box. Total cost was about $300.00. Did a complete service on the tractor including all fluids and filters. Ready for spring!

Easy winter for once.

Just working on re-ferbing an old hay wagon.

Last winter, front 4wd axle on my 3930, clutch in the 2600.

One brother has been waiting for 3 weeks for me to put new U-joints in the front end of his F250 and my other brother wants his 2 656's painted before haying season starts. This only gets done after the cows are feed and a good pile of fire wood at the back door each day. Tomorrow its a pot load of old cows to the packing plant. 10 hour round trip.

this is perfect thanks for showing it on here, i love the color and the crager s/s wheels its been sometime since ive seen a set hope you keep them on the car

Here's a close-up picture of the valve. I needed two remotes on this tractor and this was the cheapest way to do it. Tractor can returned to original in about 1/2 hr. That will make the "correct police" happy.

The main project in the shop is a construction project has taken two years and will be completed hopefully in a month or a little more. No, it's not a tractor but will be seen at tractor shows and might even see a tractor ride or two. Will post pics when it's done.

I really do want to get it done and out of there so I can start wrenching on old iron again. Jim

I rode home from the hospital the first time in one of those. Dad bought it new in 57. It had the 2 4 bbl set up on it, was turquoise and white Belair that tore up Bunkerhill drag strip and Stout Field drag strip in Indiana back in the day. Nice job so far!

Right now I am tinkering on a 1928 Chevy 1 Ton truck. Nice western shedded original truck but stuck engine.

staying warm, drinking coffee, and keeping up with newspaper reading, and taking care of my cows.
i had one sneak a calf in on me vet said she'll calve first week of march. right last week of dec she dropped an 84 lb bull calf out in corn stalks.
at present time we have almost no snow make up for that with icy roads and colder than an ice cube.

hey bill you can bring that 4520 up here i'll find something to do with it.
i love those old horses.

Been working on getting my Oliver 1650 project rolling. Been through 3+ transmission to pick out the best of the best. All so a brand new 4bt Cummins will have a happy tranny behind it :)

e I sure hope you own a few shares of Timken stock now !!! Great looking projects to everyone that has posted !!!

Timkin, SKF, and Chicago Rawhide....those are the only brands I use (with an occasional NTN or Nachi bearing thrown in). Why mess with success?

I have been working on a 1934 JD Model A that I started last February. I should be finished in the next week or two. I had a lot of help from people on this board and by using the archives as a resource as well as lurking a lot. Since I wasn't raised around these tractors and I don't have anyone local to call on, I don't think I would be able to pursue this hobby without this board and the internet. Thanks everyone.
I have posted pics on Photobucket that I have taken along the way and I plan on making a photo album of this restoration to display at shows.

e I totally agree bought 4 Timken bearing today as a matter of fact, keep us posted on progress I am looking foward to seeing finished product.

Took in a Super A today.Looks decent enough and the engine is loose but not been running for awhile. No right brake and steering box is not working. Its been changed over to a 12 volt system with a 10 si alternator installed. The battery is bad and the wiring job is terrible. The first thing will be to get it running and determine the condition of all the drive train. If all that checks out i'll then start on the steering gear and all the little things.Painting will wait until summer. Its gonna be a dandy when finished.Customer is a dandy too.He demands quality but does'nt mind paying a premium price for it.He has been sending me work for close to 25 years.

I'm helping a friend swap trannies in a Ford 2000.
You all would envy our work space. He works in about a 40,000 squ ft machine/welding/fab shop.
10 overlapping gantry cranes, lathes, mills, shears, punch press, press brakes, every concievable type of welder and a paint booth. We have the run of the place after hours and weekends.
Here's a photo of how we move things from the warehouse to the shop. It's a fresh 960 Ford coming out of the paint booth last summer. He's got it mostly back together now and is working up the fenders to put back on.

I have a MM 445 torn down in my shop waiting for parts. Tonite I plan to start on my Lincoln Weld-an-Power because it sounds like the old Kohler has a rod starting to knock. After those, back to my big project-a Cat #12 roadgrader. When I bought it, it had two stuck engines and the transmission locked up. Both engines are free now (thanks to Kroil), but need to look at the transmission-I think it is stuck in between two gears.

Now that's the way to start restoring one ! From an empty case. That's how I like to do them also.

How did you get that so clean ? especially the outside ?

Dan, probably the best advice I got about storage in my new garage was to put a 2' shelf around the entire area, just above head height. Yes, you need a ladder to get up there, but, you don't need up there that much. Greg

Oliver 1600 gas that's been on loader duty for quite a few years. Needs a major overhaul, one rear hub and some work on the steering. Doesn't turn all the way to the left like it should. Think I got the gear in the wrong position a few years ago. Gonna correct it while the loader's off.

1964 DB 880e, fixed the hydraulic lift, change all fluids and filters, get loader cylinders rebuilt, add power steering to it.

There is no sense putting time into making it pretty if it's just going to leak all over. I replace all the original seals and orings with Viton so it should be leak free for many years to come. To get the outside clean, I just sand blast. I use kerosene in a hand held sprayer to wash out the cases when they are empty. Works like a charm.
