'67 706 cutting out

Need Help New at tractor repair but heres my deal. I pulled this tractor out of a fence row, it had been sitting for about four years. the tractor will start and idle all day long, when i try to throttle it up it dies instantly. I have cleaned the carb, relaced all plugs and wires, and cleaned the tank and lines. the govenor is clean. it has the electronic fuel shutoff on it. I am leaning to rebuilding a carb, or getting a rebuilt one, what to you all think of the valves being stuck, it idles like a kitten all day.

Nope..not valves. You didn't clean the carb even though you think you did. You missed the high speed jets. You'll need to take it all apart, spray out all the tiny holes with B-12 carb cleaner and blow out with compressed air and reassemble. If it was anything else, it wouldn't idle.

Now if this is a 706 gasser you are going to have to learn several things . One when the they are cold they will stumble when ya try and give them gas . Next see if your heat riser is free and the bi metal spring is there and hooked on the pin on the out side of the manifold this deal is to help the manifold to heat faster and help with this problem . IF you do not have a book on this tractor then get one . Learn how to tune it and how to set the ing. timing correctly as this is most critical . next weather you like this or not YOU MUST RUN 93 octane gas in this tractor as that is the lowest grade that it was made to run on . You must use LOW ASH OIL in that engine . Make sure that the thermostat is working and here again this is important . Also look the engine over and locate the cubic inch displacement it will be on a flat machined surface by the oil filter base . The 706 gas came with a C263 on the early ones and a C291 on the later ones . the tune up spec. are NOT all the same on every thing. .I have covered a lot of things on 706 tractors over on the I H board and believe me i know every nut and bolt in them and all the quarks about them.

More than likely not but a bad condenser can make it do exactly like yours. Had it happen to me once in 50 years. If yours won't speed up never ever no matter what you do I would look at condenser.

Just a thought but you might check the points too. Sometimes they will idle but won't rev up if they are a little corroded.

engine has been bored out to a 301 in one of your previous posting i read the low ash oil and 93 octane so i followed your advice so thats not the problem. I havent messed with this tractor since september, but when it was warm outside i let it warm up one day for and hour and a half. that was back when gas was 350 a gallon. so that was not cheap but i knew it had to be done to get all the bugs work out. My uncle in law runs a 460 with a 301 in it for his plling tractor so the timimng is set right. you are the guy i was fishing to find on this cite. do you think it is the carburater. should i send it off or rebuild it myself, did i mention the electronic fuel shutoff.

that was the very first thing i did the cleaner screamed mouse investation when i got it, therefore i didnt even try to turn it over, that might have been costly.

I must have a rare 706 cause I run 87 in it and it runs great, doesn't stumble when throttled up or any problems. I'm even running it out in this 15 degrees pushing snow banks. This motor is only 7 to 1 compression so 87 works fine. Rotella-t oil (which is very heavy this time of season) and pulls hard! Just tune yours and it should run like a champ.

Boy, I'm going to add a new twist to this. I screwed around for two years with one that acted about the same. Finally found the problem. Fly in the gas tank. Was getting just enough gas to let it idle but not enough to run wide open throttle. Take the sediment bowl off and slip a rubber hose over the tube. Blow through it up into tank so you will clean any thing out of stand pipe in tank. I know this sounds to simple but honest that was my problem. It don"t cost any thing to try this first.

Sir, i removed the sediment bowl, and put one of them chinmey things(dont know what there called) in the tanks that way the sediments dont reach the fuel line. the tank is spottless now. did i mention i restored this tractor backasswards. I fully restored it rubber to exhaust flap. so i know the tank is clean. I cleaned it with the e85 gas. and tapped on it until all the loose pieces were out.
