I can type faster than I can write!
Does anyone keep a farming journal on their computer and if so, what program do you use to do it?

I have been using Microsoft's Calendar, but it leaves a lot to be desired!

Other Journal software out there that is good?

:) I've been keeping a farm journal for 5 years. I started with Microsoft Works Word, but switched to Microsoft Word. It has worked very well for me. When I start the word document I put a shortcut to it on my desktop. One click and I'm ready to make an entry or scroll back to retrieve info. When I'm done making an entry I just click on close. A screen asks if I want to save my changes and I click on Yes.

I have kept a simple journal since 1987. Daily, I record high and low temperatures, rainfall, and snowfall. Also have a text section where I record activities during that day. I group it by months and years.
I use a template I developed in Lotus 123 (much like MS Excel). The template was a work in progress for a couple of years, but I haven't changed it much for a long while.
Then at the end of the year, I try to print it out and bind it in some fashion, so that perhaps my grandchildren, etc. (I'm 79) may sometime find it interesting to browse.

A friend had a two inch thick three ring binder journal that he kept with him all the time until his NH FX 45 caught fire one day as he was driving down the road. He had to bail out fast and lost his lunch pail but saved the journal! I just keep sheets of paper in a file for inputs and yields for each season.

I have my Granddad's, and Dad's journals back to 1926. I kept yield infor for the six years I farmed the farm until 2007. Guess what??? The wheat was about the same price back in those days with new tractors around $3500, and our last tractor was $50000.

Exel spreadsheet. Field#, bushels produced per field, where stored, moisture, where sold, price/bu, amount of check. Jim

I use the Outlook Calander. It is right there with my email.
I actually use three calanders. One I call Daily Journal, one for Farm Inputs (applications, rates etc.) One for other specific events and meetings which are tied to farm. they can be all opened at once or individually.
There is a way to share the calanders with others (I've yet to figure this out). My wife knows how to use the calender feature well; I'll need to sit down with her for a while to teach me the finer points.
The most important point I can make is Back Up on a Flash or something else. It doesn't hurt to print out also.

Good Luck, Grant
