Update- Acheive issues

I had it at the shop today, and some of you uys were right- It's at the minimum got a blown head gasket, if the head isn't cracked.

I guess I'm in the market for a new car- looking for a 2000-2004 Jetta now. I know the 1.8T is a fun little engine, and I've test drove 2 so far, but what can you guys tell me about the 2.0? What are the actual milages? Window sticker says upwards of 29 hwy, but some ads also claim 40+.

Any one out there with a Jetta that can tell me a little pro/con?

And before you guys say to just fix up the other car and run it, there's too much other small stuff to be worth it. I was only gonna drive it for about another year anyway.

Our vehicles were good to some low mileage and we got 30k out of it, but if it didn't have the inherent problem we would still be driving it.
Son bought a Ford Contour, bad transmission, also a Saturn, blown engine from timing chain, and my Cutlass Ciera 3.1 , blown head gasket.
All are known problems with these cars and if you search through want ads (Craigslists) there are multiples of these cars with the same problems.
I went back searching lists of problems at car value and review sites and nothing shows up, but when you search by a specific problem you find lists to whole sites dedicated to people screwed over by Saturn and these other companies.

How do they start in the cold? Right now I live in an apartment building, and I don't have the option to plug it in at night, so when it gets to -20 overnight, I still need to get to work.

If I had a house and was able to plug it in on a timer, I would strongly consider it.

His starts fine, here in NY this year our coldest was only 6 below. I dont know if he even has a block heater on it. Its a tdi or turbo direct injection. Maybe 20 below would be another story without a block heater. Just remember diesel prices were very high this summer, so I dont know if you would come out ahead vs a gas model.

Bought a 2000 Jetta w/ the 2.0 for my daughter this summer (her first car for college). She is getting about 24 MPG on average mix of highway and town driving. Mechanically seems like a pretty good car. Exterior was in real nice shape, but interior seems to have taken some abuse from Previous Owner. We spent ~$6000 (including tax and tags) to bring it home.

Just my $0.02,

Kirk

They start just like a gas job, or perhaps better.
My mother has an 04 which was the first year for the common rail engine.
The start fine. They drive really nice. They're nice cars.... but since they moved production to mexico, they're not the quality car they used to be.
Stupid electrical problems with this one, a wheel bearing and a couple other things that escape me right now.

It doesn't really pay you to own a jetta anymore. Any cheap compact like the Ford Focus or somethign similar will be miles cheaper to buy and cheaper to own. Not as nice a car, but cheaper.
There was a time that you could buy the diesel Jetta for about the same money as a Tempo or escort and get near twice the mileage from it, run it 2-3 times as long and spend less in repairs. Those days seem to be gone...

My little brother had a Passat with a turbo gas motor. That thing was a total PILE. After it blew 2 turbos in under 10,000 miles he got rid of it. The TDI have a good reputation but stay away from the turbo gas motors. Lots of $$$ . THis car only had 120,000 miles.

I was just at the "Mall" in LaCrosse WI, last
weekend. In the center court were some VW
vehicles on display. On the stickers it said--
country of origin--Body/chassis-Germany, Engine-
--Hungery, Transmission--Japan, This WAS the 2
liter gas engine, automatic transmission.
