It is a shaft that sits crossways on the rear of a tractor that is used to lift the 3 point hitch arms, hydraulically controlled. Years ago, it was a similar shaft that was used to lift a front mount cultivator gang.

It is the horizontal shaft on a 3 point hitch tractor that is behind the seat, at the top of the final drive housing, that lifts the 3 point hitch arms.

EXACTLY.

The lift shaft for the three-point is what is commonly thought of as the "rockshaft", but the mechanism to lift front or mid-mounted cultivators is called a "rockshaft", as well, and probably some other implement lift mechanisms as well.

I also have one on my 41 Farmall A to lift equipment. Especially a turning plow. It rocks back and forth to lift or drop the tool in use. Manual. Crosses under the chassis at about midpoint and hooks to the chassis at two points by 2 bolts each. Henry

Coming from you- one of the guru expert mechanics around here- thanks for the compliment and reinforcement! I grew up with tractors that did not have that-just wishful thinking when looking at advertisements. Biggest thing was when Dad bought the WD45 in 56 with a mounted plow. First other hydraulic machine after that was an antique cable loader in 62! Certainly beat the hand work.
