Disposing Antifreeze

Drained the antifreeze from the radiator on the 51MT.

The 5 gallon bucket used was not the "cleanest" bucket in the shed so I do not want to re-use the antifreeze.

How should I "correctly" dispose of the antifreeze?

Im not sure if they still do but autozone use to take used antifreeze at no cost. Before our carquest closed they took it also.

You are exactly right!

The area in the shop where I drained the radiator is gravel and dirt.

I got some "used" cat litter and spread it over the spill.

That has always worked before.

I use paint filters in a funnel. Don't know if a coffee filter would be too fine, never tried.

Just pour it through a funnel with a paper towel as a filter, put it into a leaky tractor. That way you never have to throw any out!

I never dispose of old antifreeze, except a very small amount left in the bottom of the jugs I put it in. I use it to replace any that is lost instead of water or new mix. Most of the dirt, rust, etc will settle to the bottom of the jugs, so as long as you stop pouring as soon as you see any off color all is fine. I don't clean it up and try to treat it as "new" because the additives have been used up. DOUG

There are antifreeze test kits that tell you the ph, don't want it to acid, but just add some corrosion inhibitor and pour it back in. Antifreeze doesn't lose freeze protection unless overly diluted it just looses antirust/corrosion protection, most of the 50/50 premix is recycled.

May sound harsh, but mine goes right into the used oil I take back to the local Jiffy lube, along with the leaves, saw dust and june bugs that all seem to fall into an open drain pan, before I pour it into a jug to take it back. Its there problem as what to do with it.
