I appreciate everything I learn from this site and it is a very worthwhile endeavor that I appreciate learning from others that are a lot more knowledgeable than I. My problem is the diesel pickup was running well at around 60mph whne I left the highway and came to a rolling stop. When I accelerated it just quit and would not start back up. The batteries are well charged and it turns over very well but will not even try to start. Could someone kinda lead me into a troubleshooting list for me to check. This happened last night late so we just pulled it to a parking lot and will try to check it out furthur this evening after work. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am not too well versed on these new electronic engines and components. Thanks a lot and I will try whatever suggestions might come up.

Could you have water in your fuel that froze? Try checking for blown fuses or a bad relay, or maybe some kind of fuel soloind switch. Sounds like its not getting fuel for some reason so it wont fire up.

Silly answer, but do you indeed have enough fuel in the tank ?

We actually do see several cars towed in here to work that ran out of gas and owner had no clue.

What year is it my son has a 2002 that blew blue smoke once in a while when started and with in a week it wouldn"t run . They have proublems with fuel pump getting week on the 24 valve engines so it starves the injection pump and it will ruin them real fast does it flash any engine codes ? I think he said you turn the key on and off 3 times real fast and it will show the codes on the dash it will also show hours and adverage speed driven.

It may start back up when cooled off.

Sounds like a newer model. Can you hear the lift pump run for a few seconds when key is turned on?Had one('03) in shop a couple weeks ago, ended up throwing an accelerator pedal position sensor in.Spendy little suckers!

Get the codes scanned.

Diesels have a very fine fuel filter, can easily plug up if dirt gets into fuel system. This would be the first thing I would check, or have checked. My GM diesel developed a pinhole in the fuel line near fuel tank. Would draw air into fuel line, collect in filter, and eventually starve engine. (Fuel pump on engine, not in fuel tank.) Drove me crazy tracking that one down!

Sounds like it could be the fuel cut off solenoid. What year is it? Some of the other suggestions may be right too.

I have replaced alot of Injection pumps on these . Did same thing yours is doing . Check lift pump pressure and volume . If ok I 'd suspect pump . If lift pump is weak it will kill the injection pump . If injection pump does not have good fuel supply it ruins them REAL FAST !

Have the codes checked. if its an 01 or 02 you can check them by turning the key on off on off on fairly quickly and it will show the "P" codes in the odometer window. Not to say it isnt a cam or crank sensor but ill just about bet you find a P0215 or P0216 or a P1698 theres a couple others too but i bet your VP-44 just bit the dirt.:( assuming its newer than a 98.5
keep us up to date with what ya find.

Usually that is true but its not all that uncommon for the rotors to seize up in a VP-44 espescially if they have had a performance module on them. also the electronic controller on the top of the pump can go out and cause a no start condition. that kinda reminds me of a chevy hei ignition control module run perfectly fine and then all the sudden just like you turn the key off, module burned up internally.

Almost positive supply went, these truck were notorious for it, once they go the injection pump follows quicky... call D&W they have all the parts and a slick low pressure warning kit so when the supply pumps takes a dump a light comes on telling you to shut the truck down

I would check the fuel filter and Air filter those things will shut a Dodge Cummins down if not changed that is what happened to my father in law when he pulled into a boat factory to get loaded with his 97 Dodge 3500 diesel

I have a 2002 dodge 2500 diesel with 130k miles and have replaced both the lift and injection pumps. If yours is a 2nd Generation 24 valve like mine, I would suspect the vp-44 also, but check the codes to be sure. Also, if it does turn out to be a failed injection pump I would install a fuel pressure guage asap if I planned on keeping the truck to prevent spending another $1000+ on a rebuilt IP in the future.

Check out www.dieseltruckresource.com for a lot of reading on the VP-44 and some videos on how to change it out yourself.
