British Leyland

Can anyone tell me anything about a British Leyland built tractors. I'm looking at one - model 255, 50 - 60 hp diesel. I know there is problems with the starter and power steering pump. If it's a good tractor and can repair/replace parts....should I buy it?
Thanks for the input.

I just bought a leyland 384 diesel. $800 and had a bad injection pump called for price on new pump $1802 pluss shipping. i got lucky and found a good used one for $500. now i have a great tractor. that runs great and will do any thing i will ever need it to do for under $1500 i am doing a little cheapo paint just to make it look a little better. i have seen a few used power steering pumps on ebay i think they were about $350.

I'm 98% certain that the Leyland will have the same 5" Lucas starter as fitted to most Ford's of the day.
At any rate, just about any good starter shop can rebuild the old Lucas for not much money, replace the switch if necessary or drive...
Don't assume that the Ford and Leyland would use the same drive and tooth count, but if I was betting, I'd bet they're the same. Just compare them. IN short, I'd not worry about the starter.

The pump... I dunno. Probably not so easy. However, with some ingenuity I'm sure it could be made to work.

Personally I don't think I'd buy one for actual work. There's better out there with better parts availabilty. As a novelty or something to play with... yeah, I'd not mind having one.

Leyland 255....2 wheel drive.....55 flywheel horsepower.
I agree with the reply below, I would not buy one for actuall work, they have not made them for the thick end of 25 years now. They were a very solid tractor, actually not British, they were made in Scotland. The starter is a Lucas we would have no problem getting it fixed down here but I understand that Lucas parts and service can cause issues in the U.S. going from other posts. The engine is a little smaller than the 384, (3.8 litre, 4 cylinder) having the 3.4 litre motor with a CAV rotary injector pump rather than the Simms in-line unit fitted to the 384. The power steer pump is an external unit and was similar to the unit fitted to David Browns and Fords of the day. The tractor will have a 10 speed gearbox, fairly fast up the road with awfull steering and brakes!

thanks for your help. It's just a project. Not using it hard for work. Maybe pull a float in a parade.
thanks
