Deere 40s are neat little tractors. . . useful if they have a three point hitch. No live pto (direct drive off the transmission) so youd have to slip one of the override shafts on to keep your brushhog from pushing you where you dont want to go. Nice and low to the ground for stability. No water pump on the motor and they can run a little hot. Fair value?
Anywhere from $500-3000 depending on tires, sheetmetal, how motor runs, how trans drives, etc etc etc.

The 40 did not have a water pump, that was one of the needed additions to the 420 when they gave the motor more power (to compensate for the increase in heat production). Unless someone has been doing some motor swapping the JD M, MT and model 40 tractors (as well as the 320 and 330) never had a water pump. Deere started putting them on the all green 420 tractors in 1956.

A yellow and green 420 or a 430,435,440 could be ordered with live pto. Even PS & hydrulic remotes.
Before purchasing used. At least go to the dealer and for free. Get the price of something new in that class. Now you will have an accurate benchmark for the used market.

I had a 420, and liked it generally, but it was kind of inconvenient to get on and off- gotta swing your leg over the steering wheel, and its close enough quarters the you end up banging your knee all the time. I mowed hay with a 4 disc Taarup mower, which was supposed to need more HP than I had with the 420, but it did fine.

NO WATER PUMP - which means check out the engine closely and let her run a few minutes to watch the temperature. Check over the hydraulics - specifically for cracks/leaks in the rockshaft housing. On a 40u those housings can cost as much as a tractor if found in good shape. Just look over the basics - oil condition, engine sounds, transmission sounds, PTO condition. Remember not all 40u"s had PTO provision so you may be staring at a blank plate in the rear. Sheet metal is what it is....dubuque tractors are tough to find with perfect sheetmetal. Also check over the front axle...the 40u has a specific cast axle which is different than any other 40 series...values....

Good overall no obvious issues - $3-3500
Ok with some smoke or leaks - $2-2500
anything worse...<$2k...and maybe consider walking away...they are neat tractors wbut locating good parts is difficult. Good luck and post some pics. I sold both my 40u"s 3 years ago....got $3k each.

The 40U does not have live or independent PTO. The PTO was an option on that tractor. Supposedly, some parts of the 3-point hookup interfered with the PTO and both could not be used together.

Never seen a 40 without a pto and a cat one three point hitch. Use together at the same time too.
Except for a few custom ordered industrial units.

Mine had the blank plate, but it had the PTO control lever on the transmission. The PTO shaft had to be purchased separately.
