8N, 9N, 2N?

well the 9N came out in 39, the 2N in 42 and the 8N in 48.

No easy way to tell the 9 and 2 apart. they both have a three speed transmission and are pretty much identical. There are some slight differences in the dash and battery supports. Guessing someone who knows more than I do will be able to shed more light here. This whole series will have hubs on front that take a special rim due to the large bolt circle. Like maybe 10 or 12 inches. the rear wheels have a large hub also that takes it's own adapter.

The 8N takes a wheel in front that looks a little more normal. Bolt pattern in back will be much smaller also. 8N also has a 4 speed transmission.

Don't count on the serial number cause it is stamped in the engine block and many of those got changed out over the years.

There is a board below named "Ford 9N/2N/8N" where real experts on these 3 models of tractors can tell you everything you would ever want to know. Suggest you re-post there. Tom

Just a interesting side bar. Last week when I was at my local Case-New holland dealership the sale person showed me a brochure on the new 8N that they are starting production on. They will have a price tag of just over $50,000.

Quick easy way to tell if it is an 8N is the tranny. 8N has a 4 speed where as the 9N/2N has 3 speeds in the tranny. Plus the late 8N mid 1950-1952 has the side mount distributor. Between the 9N and 2N that gets a bit harder to tell and about the only way to be sure is by the serial number

Do all 8N's have the diamond plate floor boards, and all 2's and 9's have just a peg to rest your feet on?

Nope there are after market floor boards made for the 9N/2N so the pegs do not help tell the story. As for diamond plate on the 8Ns I have had more then one 8N that the floor boards where just slick metal floor boards

How in the world do they expect to get that kind of money? Assuming it will be about the same physical size as the old ones, it would be 25 to 30 HP. You can buy new in that size all day for less than 20k.

Mike the new "New Holland Boomer 8N" is a 4WD, diesel with about 50+ PTO HP. Only thing like the old 8n is grill, hood shape, and gray and red paint job. Tom
