Ford Tractor 4140D 4-Speed Transmission Locked Up

Hello everyone, I am new to the board. I just purchased a Ford 4000 HD Industrial Model 4140D (41400D serial 55481). This tractor has a messed up 4-speed transmission. The guy told me he was bushhogging with it and lost second gear, and kept using it until he locked the whole transmission up. I took the top cover off and looks like some teeth are missing on what I believe to be second gear. I am wondering the best way to replace the gear or gears. I think pulling the engine would be a good start, but what do you guys think? I have never rebuilt a transmission, but I am going to try. I do have access to a 801 transmission that has the same casting number, on a tractor I bought for parts, but don't want to tear it apart unless I have to. The 4140 does have the sherman transmission in front and the handle is broken off, could be from being cut off to fit under the steering arm, I don't know, but I couldn't get it to move, back and forth. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Matt_G

I'm not really familiar with the industrials.. but if it was a 4 cyl model.. like an 1801.. etc.. it may fit. if it is a 3 cyl model.. I don't see an 840/841 tranny bolting up..

It is the 4 cylinder model. Everything looks the same as the 801, except for the frame around it and the heavy duty axle. I am pretty sure it is similar to the 1801 too. It doesn't have the cable steering though, it is direct hydraulic.

(quoted from post at 07:51:12 04/02/09) Sounds like yo might have a swap.

was sort of wanting to keep the original housing on there. Would you? I would also have to drill a hole for the Sherman. I am thinking about just using the gears, or having a machine shop I know, weld them and machine the gears down. By the way, Why would that Sherman not be changing gears, I tried moving the handle and it wouldn't move. I don't think the last guy that had it even knew it had a Sherman transmission. I brought it home before I realized it. Also, It has some arms that extend out in the back other than the three point hitch, I wonder what those are for. Their is suppose to be 4 but they are just 3 back there. The 4th one has been removed. They are real thick and heavy duty though, they look like they couple together on a shaft. Would this be what a backhoe hooks to or mounts on?

arms in back aren't braces to keep brushhog from swaying sideways, are they?

Can't guess why sherman won't shift, unless when main trans bound up something inside the sherman bound as well.

me? rebuild a trans vs swap an entire one out? I think it would be les work to swap.. etc.

as for the arms.. could they be stabilizer/sway bars?

No, these are about the size of a 2x4 they are huge. However they probably do keep things in place though, more so than if they weren't there. They are about 4 ft long one goes over the back axle the other goes under and they have a big pin in them on both sides, they are very close to the fenders too and come out ever bit as far as the lift arm does, that hooks to implements. Thanks
