40 u brakes

Just bought 40 u and the brakes are tight with no play in pedal. How do I back them off? I don't have a manual.

Under each final drive where the brakes are (internally) a stud drops down. The brake pedal on the right and the brake lever on the left slide around/over the stud and a 3/4 nut then a 9/16 lock nut "tighten up" the brake pedal. To "loosen" the brake pedal back the nuts off a bit. Springs should hold the pedals "up" under the right foot step.
