Super M wiring

I"m converting our super m to 12v, i have a delco alt with the 1 2 post, i ran the wire from 1 to the on off switch then to the ballast resistor and the 2 to the bat post then to the amp meter then a wire from the amp meter to the on off switch for constant power. I think this is right but i did not put a warning light in and for some reason the tractor will not shut off with the switch. What did I do wrong.

It must have a warning light in the wire to #1 terminal (not to ground). A 3 amp 100piv diode will also do the trick, (put the band end of the diode toward the alternator).a 10 or 20 ohm 10 watt resistor will also work in the place of the diode. Do it and all is well. When the alternator runs, the #1 terminal is fed 12v from inside the Alt. This turns out the light by having 12v+ on bothe terminals of the bulb. The light cannot power the ignition. The diode stops the flow to the ignition, and the resistor acts like a light bulb like load.
Choose one and do it, only one, not more. do not use a LED for the light. it needs to be the same as a side marker light bulb. JimN

There is a plug you can put in where the two smaller wire plug into the alt and this will convert the alternator to a one wire alternator. I would suggest doing that.

The problem you are having is caused by feed back from the alternator. It is feeding your ignition system. An idiot light in that circuit should create enough resistance to lower the voltage so the engine will shut off. Another device you can use is a diode of the correct size as was mentioned in the other post.

But if it were me I would look into making it just a one wire alternator. You can save yourself a lot of time and cursing.
