The horse drawn mower, Is that a Deere or an Ideal.

Yours looks more complete than mine as it has the cast oil can holder. but the tool box looks mounted sideways compared to my Ideal by IH of Cleveland. I do have a very close age to mine being a 4' model 1904-05 according to a fellow on this forum.

It is a No. 3 JD mower.

It has an enclosed gear.

From what I understand, the DAIN mower preceeded the DEERE mower.

The lid on the toolbox has the leaping 4 legged deere with traces of green paint in the lettering.

The die-cast caps on each wheel have [b:654c4848f0]No. 3[/b:654c4848f0] on them.

We also have a McCormick No. 7 sickle mower that will actually cut grass.

Now I'm really in trouble with my "green" tractor buddies.

Here is a photo of our IH rake.

Just want to let you know that Nancy and I appreciate your support concerning other matters.

I've taken the wheels and axles from the No.3 mowers and made glass top coffee tables out of them. Leave the axle cover with the No. 3 imprint on them, sand blast them, cut a piece of glass round to fit the wheel and cut out the center for the hub. Lay the glass flat on the spokes. They are a real conversation piece and last forever. I've used old corn planter press wheels for the base.

Now there is a good idea!

Sure would like to see some photos if you've got them.

Sounds like one of the "ultimate" JD collector's items.

James/Nancy I may know where some are in Ar. if your interested! E-M open
BTW enjoy y'lls PICS1
keep -um coming

Thanks for the pictures, sure brought back memories. Dad had a #4 Deere horse drawn mower, I think new in 1937. As the years of designing machines went by, I think that #4 should be awarded a design prize...look at its design for function, creative pattern work, with a perfect balance of choice of materials that solved the ground driving need for weight, enclosed, efficient gearing...sorry, I'll get off the soap box. Hey don't stop now!

That is how we all learn about this antique equipment.

Everybody contributes what they remember and collectively we all benefit.

Something special about the old horse drawn mowers that folks seem to like.

Not many of these old horse drawn mowers are around.

We didn't really need one, but it was close ( 350 miles ) and we just like the old JD equipment.

Talking about the design of the newer mowers, I once read that [b:654c4848f0]"the #5 mower looks like it was designed by a blacksmith having a bad day."[/b:654c4848f0]
