Good weekend in spite of the rain

Had planned to work in the woods this weekend, but Ma Nature had other plans. In between the showers, I pulled three boulders from a field I plan to plant. After digging down, I wraped a tow strap around each one and they came right out. Have to fill the craters. Also got a two-pen rabbit hutch finished. Just need a buck and a doe.

It'll be a few days before I can get back in the woods. It's pretty soggy.

The rain was JUST what I needed here. Recieved 3/4" yesterday. Soil service said I needed 1/4-1/2" rain maximize the preemergent I had sprayed on the planted corn ground saturday, which was planted friday. Couldnt have worked out better for me. Now I hope I can get the fertilizer on the rye prior to the showers forecasted for later in the week. Have deliver a load of manure for an elderly couple down the road that plants an acre of pumpkins. They do it for the young kids in the area so I for sure am gonna follow though today.

We worked from dawn to dusk Saturday at the hayfield. Got the dirt work finished (James will post pictures/video). Re-cultipacked the terrace area since rain had packed it hard. Re-disced 4 other areas, then culti-packed them.

Finally, everything was ready for seeding. Since the areas were small, we didn't use a tractor and the Herd seeder. I used a lawn-type push broadcast spreader to put out Cheyenne bermuda seed.

We're hoping for some soft rain this week to get the Cheyenne bermuda up and going.

Forecast is for rain possible every day for the next 10 days. Just hope we don't get a toad strangler!

Nancy;

I've heard nothing but good things about Herd seeders. Next time I see one at an auction, I'm bidding. They sound perfect for my needs. Any major problems you've encountered?

Pull on the shaft that turns the broadcaster to see if there's any "play" in it.

We bought a used one and refurbed it. Never having used one before, we didn't realize the drive shaft had developed some "play". When we started using it, the play allowed the shaft to slip out a little, causing the gears not to line up properly and the lower gear to the drive shaft got chewed up.

Of course we were trying to seed about 4 acres at the time and had to have it. James smoothed out the the teeth on the gears with a file and re-aligned the gears. He then took a washer, cut a gap in it and drove it over the shaft to take up the slack and its okay now.

I'll take some pictures next weekend and have James post them.
