no start stihl

I hope someone out there has some advise. I have a very old stihl 028. It quit while cutting some wood one day and I haven't been able to figure out what the problem is. It has spark, the compression seems good, but I don't have a compression guage that will work on it. It has fresh fuel/oil mixture. The plug gets wet after trying to start it. Just replaced the plug. Anyone have any ideas?

if its not the spark arrester screen did you blow out the combustion chamber when you replaced the plug? if not there may have been enough gas in there to foul the new plug too try 1 more new plug and pull the starter rope several times while the plug is out to clear the gas out

Try another plug (bad, new plugs seem to be pretty common these days). If not, and all the other things mentioned don't work, try pulling the carb and cleaning. My Stihl 026 had the same symptoms as yours last year. The plug would get wet which also made me think the fuel system was fine, but it started fine after cleaning out the carb.

I have an 028 super, and it"s done a similar thing twice. Both times the fuel line had a pinhole in it, and the carb couldn"t make enough suction to pick up fuel. Just looking at the line, it looked OK, but when you bent the line a certain way, there was the hole or crack. HTH

I just re-read your post and saw the part about the wet plug. That puts my theory in jeopardy, but it may be worth a try as a last resort to get a new fuel line if all the other good suggestions don't work.

My 028 had the same problem. Plug would fire like mad when I had it out and pulled the rope, but not when it was installed. Turned out the plug wire was worn and grounding out when installed. When I'd pull the wire and connect it to the plug, the wire moved enough so as not to ground out thru the worn area. That was a pain to figure out...
