OT milk and cream cans

Only difference is if you put milk into the can it's called a milk can. If you put cream in the same can it is then called a cream can. They come in 10 ,8,5 and 3 gallon. I sometimes put water in the can and I would then call it a water can.lj

Around our area, the 3 & 5 gallons were considered cream cans and the 8 & 10 milk. But that probably differs from area to area

Don't want to get in any serious arguement on milk or cream cans. There was a difference, as someone previously stated, the amount each held. The cans used for milk was if my memory serves me correctly 32 quart or 8 gallon. The cans used for cream was much smaller and had one handle on the side for lifting. I can give a picture of the containers used for milk as my wife has a couple sitting on the front verandah that were tole painted. My history goes back a long time in the milk delivery system to the day's of delivering milk with a horse and wagon. Cheers, Murray

Milk and cream cans are differant. The 2 larger cans in the picture are milk cans and the 3 smaller cans are cream cans. That is a milk strainer sitting on top of the smaller milk can.

Now if you want to move forward a few years we can talk about returnable milk bottles that had the cardboard stopper to seal the bottle top.

I can also remember the crimped card board caps that clamped over the tops.

always wondered how they took a round circle of card board and made those neat folds . also must to have used some kind of wax to make it stay in place.

I was young then now you have me feeling my age. {*^&^%%^&&*}!!

The crimped covers you mentioned were placed over the card board caps that fit in a little grove on the top ridge of the glss milk bottle. This was to make it a little more sanitary, to prevent dust/dirt from getting around the edge of the inner milk cap. The crimped cover that fit on the top would at times if the machine was not working properly come quite loose. This method was a good invention to make the bottled milk more sanitary. Cheers, Murray

Cans... hummmm lucky guys.. lol. All I remember is the bucket... I milked the cow into the bucket and took it in house to my mother. She poured into some other container with a screen she held over her container. Then she would pour that cream in a glass butter churn. I had to spin and spin the handle till the butter whiped up. ... Was not to happy about it back then. But looking back.. was some
good times with my mother in the kitchen. Have a great day. :)
