What is the reason for removing suckers (the small branch between the main stem and a branch) on tomatoes? My father had me do this when I was a youbg kid but never knew the reason. Thanks Amo

The suckers don't produce fruit but they rob the plant of some strength. I suckered them when I was a kid, but the plants of today are much improved and I don't think they have to be suckered. It's the same with sweet corn. rw

Rusty yes the sucker will produce fruit,,, I do sucker mine, cuzz if I don't the plant sorta bushes out and does not grow tall,,, course I cage mine in concrete wire,,, I do believe that a plant that is suckered will produce longer than one that's not,,, tho I believe a plant that for the short term thats in not suckered will play out faster than one that is not,,, My suckered plants will produce from the first of July till frost, (some were toward the end of October),,, I do use the suckers to start my late maters (first of July) I need to get my suckers to root rite NOW but to busy

I have a few suckers that I rooted a few weeks ago that have maters on'em (errr what the ell is going on) I plant maters every way I know,,, every way I have heard of,,, in bails,,, upside down in buckets,,, in pots,,, in a green house,,, most all form suckers,,, they all do well

I run a business (garage) and display my ways of growing them rite in front of the shop were folks can C'em,,, If one does not try then they are 2 lazy,,, its very EZ,,, been eat'n maters for a few weeks now (thanks to a bud with a green house)

While suckers will produce tomatoes just like any other part of the plant; removing the suckers is just a good way of pruning the plant.

Indeterminate type tomatoes should have some of the suckers removed to keep the size of the plant in check because the plants continue to grow all season long. Newer Determinate type tomatoes can go with out pruning because they reach a set size and then stop growing.

They produce another trunk and will form vegetables but it may be too much for the plant to feed thereby getting smaller ones.
