last time I used it 2 years ago it worked fine now its stuck in reverse, you can see the shift rod move a little but it wont go more than about a 1/4 inch any ideas ? I think its a 1977 model.thanks

Could be a variety of things. Could be your shifting dog slipped out but not hardly. If it was shifting good when you put it up, then it'll shift good now. Try this, put pressure on your shifter and with your foot, move the prop. Could be just stuck. Be sure to check your lower lube and if you haven't replaced the water impeller in the lower unit, consider replacing it.

bo, I tried that didn't work, how do I get the lower unit off just take out those 6 small bolts or is there something else I have to do? thanks

The problem is not necessarily in the lower unit but in the linkage some where. See if there isn't a cover plate on the side that gives access to the linkage coupling. Disconnect the linkage and see if the top end is free. If you take off the lower unit you will have to disconnect that anyway. They aren't made to be shifted with the engine off by the way.

Yeh, the six little 7/16ths and drop it about an inch. At that gap, you'll see the shift rod connected together with a two bolt connector. Take out one of the bolts and the whole lower should drop. If it doesn't, a bit of prying will help it along. You'll have the lower with the driveshaft sticking up. On the driveshaft, at the lower is the housing for the impeller. If you replace the impeller, you might consider replacing the housing.
I'm trying to remember. It's been a while.
You try to move the fly wheel in the power head?
Your shift rod could also be stuck somewhere. Before you drop the lower, do check out the linkage. Also....that motor has to have the throttle all the way to slow to be able to shift. Did you check that? Take the cover off and facing the power head, on the right, low, you'll see the interlock for the shifter. It locks out the shifter so that you can't start it in gear.
CRS is kicking in hard.

hope this doesn't sound stupid ,but on my 9.9 it won't shift unless throttle is turned down ,,I know it seems obvious and my apologises ,but hey worth looking at

If it needs parts forget it a 30 year old outboard is hard to find parts for.
Most likely it was used in salt water and is frozen up.

Also, be real careful in taking off those little 1/4" bolts, they corrode into the aluminum housing. Not the tread area but the non thread bolt area. Work them back and forth until you're certain that they'll come out. Worse case....use an angle grinder to cut the bolt heads off and drop the lower. Tip the motor upside down and fill the remaining bolt area with penetrating oil and let sit. Come back in a day or two and jiggle with a set of vice grips. PB Blaster is good. You might want to rap the bolts with a plastic handle of a screw driver every few hours to set up a minor vibration to let the penetrating solution get in.
Parts are available. The motor was sold as an Evinrude and a Johnson...same one....very popular in its day and there were tons of them around.

Don't apologise...classic error. I've been running boats a long time, over 45 years and have three of those little motors, a 9.9, and 2 15s and I still catch myself trying to shift with the throttle in high speed.

bo, I took the bolts out but it doesn't want to come down far enough to undo the linkage,I can see the 2 bolts for the linkage, does the drive shaft just slip down or what ? I'm about ready to have a beer and say forget it and take it to a shop to fix it.thanks

Sh%$t! I think it has to be in nuetral or forward to drop down further. The shift rod is connected also at the top and when you shift it into forward or nuetral, it drops down far enough to get on of the connector bolts out. For course you can shift it and I can't remember how it's connected at the top. You'll have to disconnect it at the top. Did you see if the throttle is in idle speed and then shift?
It's late now but if you want to wait til tomorrow, I'll check my motors and get see what I can see. I'll be busy most of the day but free in the evening.
I'd get that puppy apart. Also, look at the power head area and you'll see how that linkage is connected, some thing could be messed up there where you might have to just jiggle something.
Tomorrow, start a new thread cause this will disappear into page 2-3.

It's real possible that the shift rod is corroded at the lower unit. Where it goes into the lower unit. It'd be sealed with a gasket down there, if you can spray a little penetrating stuff onto the shift rod, chances are good that it'll run down the rod and into the area where the rod goes into the lower unit. Then jiggle the shifter and you might get lucky.

Don't believe the obsolete hog-wash.It is a fine motor with all parts easly available.I have a 1972 that has been used very hard in sand which has required several parts. It is simple to change anything including gears if nessary.Listen to BO ,what he is telling you is spot on for disassembly.BTW the 9.9 is the same engine with a different carb and timing that revs more rpms, all parts interchange.Change that rubber pump impeller while you are in there.

I think I have one of those that came out of the garage of a burnt house. IT was not hurt but the man died before we got a title for it just sitting in a container if you are interested.

Not true walt I get parts for my 75 25hp and my 2 18hp from 56-58 no problem. You just have to know where to go. Brp still sells most but has a high mark up.
