2030 John Deere

I have a John Deere 2030 Diesel Tractor. Used for small 10 acre use. Garden tilling and use a finih mower and bush hog. I have owned for 10 years. Great tractor till this season. Its hard to explain but will do my best. Starts and runs fine. But when you push the clutch in it stops the tractor. Almost like applying the brakes. It is worse when its in the hi range. Tractor has hi-lo shifter on left hand side of console. I have had a mechanic come out and look at. We rent and sell construction equipment where I work. We have changed hydrulic filter and looked at the clutch. Not sure what to look for next. We have manuals etc but don't know much about these. Wanted to know if anyone had ever experienced before I take it to dealer.

Simple checks such as opening the brake bleeders to ensure the brakes are not "on".
Jack up the rear end and check if one wheel turns easier than the other. And listen for "bad sounds".
Pull the trans screen and filter then look for debris.
If the guy out was really a mechanic, he would have checked these basics.
How long have you been operating the tractor as such?

Thanks for the response. Sorry I did not put the other stuff in there. Yes, we did jack up and check. Both wheels turn freely. Both seem to be the same and no noise found. Stopped using tractor when I noticed problem at start of spring. Thought best to find problem before kept using. I will get with him on brake bleeders and look at transmission screen.

Clutch brake that just decided to start working maybe? Does it do this when you push the clutch all the way down or even part way down?

Can you roll the tractor in neutral when the engine isn't running? Changing filters won't do anything. You've got a hydraulic, dual-clutch hi/lo that's attached to an 8-speed gear transmission. It sounds like something is binding in the gear-trans - but hard to tell without checking.

With the four-speed stick in the gear trans in neutral, the tractor should roll fairly easily, especially if pointed down a hill. If it won't roll, and you're sure the brakes aren't hung up, -then the gear trans has a problem. When the gear-trans is in neutral, the hi/lo isn't even attached to the rear wheels. If it DOES roll with the gear-trans in neutral, it soundls like you've got a failure inside the hydraulic hi/lo assembly.

Yes, we can roll tractor in neutral with out running or while running. I have tried in my shop and can roll it also letting roll down hill. Does so with no problem. So maybe the hi/lo is the problem?

Does it pretty much with clutch all the way down. You can ease down on it and its not as noticeable. But when its in the high range it will scoot the tires it stops so quick. Still stops quick when its in low but not so fast as to scoot the tires in grass or gravel. Also seems to lug engine when sitting still and switch between hi-lo. From lo to high it definietly changes pitch or sound of engine and lugs it more. Still runs good but is noticeable sitting still switching it.

Seems it has to be if I'm understanding you correctly. This lockup only happens when the tractor is in gear, correct? When you push in the clutch pedal, it is supposed to disengage the clutch pack inside the hi/lo by drop the pressure-oil to near zero. Sounds like something inside the reverser is not turning as freely as it should, and as soon as the pedal is down, and clutch pressure drops, it locks up.

I'll add that I was a Deere mechanic when the 2030 first came out, and I don't recall ever coming across this sort of problem. But, I haven't seen everything. Many 1020s, 2020s, 2030s etc. out there with either a reverser, or hi/lo stuck in there in front of the trans.
